Is my STB defective?

I recently added a new HD STB to my service. This is a second TV upstairs. The primary TV has no issues. On the upstairs TV, turning on the TV takes a long time. I hear crackling noises and the STB display flashes the channel number along with a glimpse of an error message starting with DU(I/L?). The TV is new and worked fine with the non-HD box we used to have. Is this a STB problem?

"Crackling noise" is not good. Do you power off the STB at a power strip? What you discribe is close to what you might see when the STB boots up. It is best to leave the STB plugged in and powered or you will see this every time.

No, it's on all the time. This is why I was thinking there is a problem. Thanks. I guess I'll give them a call.
