Is the FiOS HD DVR better than Comcast's?

We have Comcast now, and the HD DVRs all (we have 3, they're Motorola 6412s) have this tendency to sometimes, randomly, when fast-forwarding or rewinding, SUDDENLY jump back to the beginning of the recording. In the next month we're going to have FiOS available, and it'll be about $50/mo cheaper for the whole phone/internet/HD-cable combo, so we're obviously inclined to switch (more HD channels too), but there's always the risk of a new provider, especially having read some of the horror stories here ... so we're reluctant ... but this Comcast suddenly-start-over glitch is highly annoying (yes, we know we can quickly fast forward again, but sometimes we do that, push play, and ... it jumps back to the beginning again -- at 1:45 of a 2:00 movie, this can be exceedingly annoying!). SO, my question is, since these 6412s are running on provider software, are the FiOS HD DVRs free of this stupid glitch?

Yep - Since the roll out of settop code 1.6.2 - this issue is now fixed.   : - )

What is the capacity of the Comcast DVR? The HD capacity of the FIOS DVR is embarrasing.

Comcast's DVRs have the same 160GB capacity.

Comcast's DVRs do store a bit more cable content, because they apply more compression to their digital cable channels.  That added compression reduces quality, but it also reduces the amount space needed for each recording.  Comcast does pass local HD channels as is, in most areas...so you'd have exactly the same amount of recording time for ABC/CBS/FOX/NBC as the FiOS DVR.

As of today, Comcast and FiOS customers with Motorola DVRs have no choice but to buy a TivoHD or Moxi if they want a HDTV DVR with more capacity.  This summer, Comcast will roll out newer 250GB DVRs in many markets.  FiOS is also expected to offer more storage options in the second half of 2009.

That's good info, thanks. Are there technical or business reasons why external storage isn't more readily supported? I'm not in the business so I'm clueless - I'm sure there's a reason but as a consumer and subscriber it seems like all upside to me, even for the provider (I'll consume more programming).

Copyright concerns -- same reason it can take 5 minutes for some Blu-rays to load.... <Lessig-esque rant deleted....>

We changed from ComCast to Fios about six months ago.  We'll never go back.  Not only is the DVR better, we have more channels which are arranged more intelligently for less money. Our internet is also faster and more reliable than ComCast ever was.
