multiple external hard drives for DVR?

I am worried about losing my recorded data on my external hard drive. I thought I lost everything last weekend but it turned out the Sabrent enclosure died. I am so glad I didn't lose the data.

to protect the data,

1. After ejecting the external hard drive from the DVR and installing a new hard drive in my external enclosure, will the DVR still read the original hard drive if I return the original hard drive back to the enclosure?

or

2. Anyway to backup the data on the external hard drive?
