No picture, no sound on TV

We finally got the Verizon DVR and it has been working just fine until last nite.  Last nite, while trying to start a recorded program, the screen froze adn the sound turned off.  Then, the DVR flashed some sort of message (it was either Hi-8 or Hi-3; I can't remember).  I turned it off and waited.  Turned it on and... same frozen screen.  Turned it off for all night.

This morning, I cannot get a picture.  I can get the Verizon Guide and Favorites and all those templates but no picture and no sound.  What gives and how do I fix it??

Did you just hit the power button? Or did you unplug? If not unplug it for 30 sec and re plug it in. See if that works.

Before I read Tim's reply, I called Verizon.  They said the unit had to be re-set.  I was on the phone for at least 15 minutes, most of it spent waiting for the Verizon Tech Guy to send a signal to my unit and re-set.  It worked!  I then asked what the problem was and if this would happen again or if it was a one-time deal.  The guy told me it WOULD NOT happen again.

Well, guess what!  Yes... it happened again.  Of course, it happened Friday night so I have no way to call Tech Support to get it fixed.  Am I going to have to do this every day now?  Ugh.

Well, first of all, where did you get the idea you could not call Tech Support on Friday night? Or for that matter, at any time? The FSC is open for technical support 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Now, billing is another issue, they are not open those hours, although I think they should be.

Second, before calling again, try turning the box off, unplugging the electrical power, waiting 15-20 seconds, and plugging it back in. Then wait for it to start up, and turn it on, I bet the problem will be gone (no guarantee, just a meaningless bet...).

And finally, no, you should not have to do it every day, but sometimes things just get screwed up enough that more than a power off/on is needed. Several years ago my DVR recorded a couple of programs that, every time I tried to play them, the DVR hung up, would not even power off, had to pull the plug each time. Eventually I smartened up a little, gave up trying to play them and deleted them, have never had any problem even remotely like that since.

A couple thoughts come to mind.

What is the model of your dvr...7216 or 6416?

On some units if the dvr is pretty full, you may consider deleting some of the old programs.

Next, check all your wiring.  make sure all your connections are snug.  If it's older wiring, consider updating it to rg6

Justin - thank you for your reply.  I got the impression that Tech Support was only open M-F 8 to 5 from my memory which thought I had read that on my bill when I called last. In addition to your post, I have since called Verizon today and found out that that is not true.  Next time, I will know better.

On Thursday, the Tech Guy did a complete reload.  Today, the guy did a re-set. Next time, I will try the unplug-replug trick to see if that works.

Or, maybe just try to get you to help since you are very close to me... I am northeast of you!  Man Very Happy

Provider - thanks.  I have the 6416 DVR.  All cables are snug and tight. DVR is less than 20% full.
