Number of set top boxes needed to run 1 television

At my friends house they have 2 set top boxes hooked up to their television in their livingroom.  One is an HD the other is SD.  Why would they

need both?  Could they have been talked into it by the cable guy or is their really a necessity?  Also they cannot delete any recorded programs

from the DVR.

No reason to have two, unless you depend on picture-in-picture (and don't have a TV with a digital tuner) or want a separate, dedicated STB for a Slingbox.
