Problem playing recorded show on DVR

I have a 7216 DVR w/ IMG 1.7. At least two times since the 1.7 upgrade (and never before), I have had a problem trying to playback a program on my DVR.

The program is set as part of the series manager, with the highest priority in the list (it has a protected "shield" next to it). It is set to not be erased "Until I Delete" and is set to record both duplicates and new/repeats. Nine times out of ten, the program will play fine.

However, sometimes when I try to play the program (same one twice), it will just go back to whatever live channel I was on before when I press "Play" in the DVR menu, like it was a 1-second recording or something. However, the program shows up in the recorded lists at its full duration, 35 minutes, and 35 minutes are taken off the drive status when I delete it. I just can't play back the video when this happens. I've tried rebooting the STB and also starting from both an SD channel and an HD channel (SD override is on, so the TV resolution changes...the program is in HD).

This was the only program I had recording at that time, and I wasn't using the STB at the time, so I can't see it being a tuner issue. I did record some other programs earlier in the day, but my DVR wasn't even half full after that.

ekem015,

Sounds to me like it's most likely a corrupt file (bad "download" or write-to-disk).  Digital video files are unlike analog video in that it is not linear.  For example, let's say that the "bad portion" of the download happening 45 minutes into a 60 minute show.  Logic would suggest (much like with analog medium, i.e.. tape) that you would be able to view the first 45 minutes and nothing beyond that.  Unfortunately that's not the case as digital files are created in a non-linear fashion.

This is the most likely reason for this.  It's not to say that it is impossible that the IMG software is not the culprit.  The only thing with that is that the software shouldn't be bias as to which files it will and won't play.  If there is an issue that creates playback issues, it SHOULD affect all video files, not just that one program.

Now as for what causes the bad file- it could be mechanical (the harddrive literally fails whether it be the write arm or the plates).  However, this is usually accompanied by a constant "whirring" or clicking sound.  The alternative is that it could be a bad sector on the harddrive.  This would mean that any information that is written to this portion of the harddrive would be virtually unreadable.

What I would suggest is to further monitor this issue and see if you can pick up on any patterns.  If it persists, we will want to move forward with a harddrive wipe and, if necessary, we can replace the STB all together.

Regards,

Chris

Thanks for the response, Christian. If it happens again I will contact you. The good thing is that it's only happened twice over the past two months or so.

I'm not sure if I'm technically supposed to start a new thread or not, but I'm having exactly the same problem so this seems to be a good spot to keep these same issues together. I was just googling this issue and it does seem that this exact issue is cropping up for multiple people.

I've been getting these same types of broken recordings where a HD show is sitting there in my play list and using up hard drive space, but will not play - it just drops straight to the channel the box was already showing. I don't recall seeing his happen prior to this fall TV season (which does indeed coincide with when 1.7 rolled out), but I did lose a show to this issue about once per month, until just these last 3 weeks where I have had 4-5 recordings fail.

Normally I get annoyed, and go watch the show from the network's website, then delete the episode off my DVR. I'm assuming there is file corruption of some kind - maybe it happened during recording, or perhaps there is a bad sector on the hard drive. My latest broken recording of last night's episode of Bones I have deliberately left on my DVR in case it is a bad sector - I can use this failed recording to block out the bad spot from being used by future recordings.

Is there any way Verizon techs could remotely log in and analyse this recording and perhaps spot what might be wrong with it?

You're having the same problem as all these posters here

http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-TV-Technical-Assistance/DVR-Issue-Some-recorded-shows-can-t-be-pla...

Getting no help from Verizon tech or the people that run this forum. This is a bug from the 1.7 firmware upgrade.

I'm about to cancel Fios because of this. I'm getting 1 botched recording once every 2 days or so, depends how much you record, the more you record the quicker a botched recoring will pop up.

I'm having the same problem with 2 shows (annoyingly, 2 that aren't available on demand or on Hulu).  I don't buy the nonlinear file mumbo jumbo from support.  I'd love to hear the details of a codec that will allow you to watch a show from the beginning and skip through it while it's still recording that somehow also relies on the entire recording being complete to play the beginning.

I've had this problem, but only twice in the last four months and I use the DVR a lot. In both cases, the shows were live sporting events. Never had it with a series or single show which was scheduled to record.

In the first one, I had pressed the Record button while watching to get the last hour or so to watch later. In the other, I had set up a Manual recording to catch the last 45 minutes. Both shows appeared properly in the Recorded Shows list, but would not play.I don't know if it's just a "sports" coincidence, but this is definitely a software bug in my humble opinion.

Tech support said they had heard of this (obviously they have) but offered no further help other than to report any further occurances...
