This seems to be a minor thing but I'm curious: It's not uncommon for me to have power blips where I live and I've noticed lately that whenever the power goes out and comes back on, my QIP-7100 series STB will reset itself but when I want to turn the TV on, I have to press the "power" button on the STB itself. Is that normal? Or am I just not waiting long enough for the Fios guide to download?

@questioning wrote:I'm really not following this. No harm has ever been done to any of my electronic devices. Why would this UPS be a good investment? My original question was just to confirm if it's normal to have to press the power button on the STB itself when turning on the TV after a power blip.
And the answer, in my experience, is no. The remote does not go through the STB to reach the TV and so there should be no need to turn it on at the box. You might find the TV and the STB are out of sequence, i.e, one goes on when the other goes off, but you can handle that on the remote using the seperate tv power button.

You might want to get a small UPS to keep the STB running during short outages. You can get one that will work for 30 minutes or so for under $50.
Good Luck.

What is a UPS? I'm assuming you're not referring to United Parcel Service.
Can you post a link so I can see what you're talking about?

UPS - Uninterrupted Power Supply. Think of it as a surge protector with a backup battery in it. This way, if you have power blips, your delicate electronics won't be harmed by the fluctuations. It sounds like it'd be a good investement for you. I have several since my power tends to behave in a similar fashion.

But you asked what a UPS is and also asked for a link to one - both of which were provided to you in this thread.

I'm not understanding why this UPS was suggested to begin with.

Because it will help the power surges from getting to your equipment. The power dies and comes back - the equipment never sees it. THink of it as a super surge suppresor
