Without additional specifics here's what the Verizon DVR can do. You can record 2 shows while watching a previously recorded show. If no shows are recording the last 2 channels are beffered for about 1 hour. Also, using On-Demand is the same as weatching a live program (if recording 2 shows then if you want On-Demand it will require you to stop recording one).
If you want more info please provide some detail.

Direct TV(up to 6 shows at once) and Xfinity allow the user to record multiple shows and still watch another show at the same time. Verizon DVR only allows the user to record 1 show while watching a second. When will Verizon upgrade to allow multiple reordings?

Directv is a bit of a trick. They record all 4 major networks as one muxed frequency. Essentially only 3 tuners.
Verizon's new device is out there but just in a beta. Not clear if its only employees or some users with non-discloser agreements. Supposively it comes with a 6 or 12 channel configuration.

Think you're confusing Dish with DirecTV.

Sorry right.
However the doc I see on the Directv says only 5 progams can be recorded at a time.

That is correct.
