Recording playback problems

I rent 2 DVRs from Verizon FIOS. What I describe happened once on one dvr and another time on the other, so it does not seem to be box dependent. In both cases, a different recorded program which showed as having been recorded the full time allotted to the program would playback for part of the program and then freeze at that point. Fast-forward, pause/un-pause, restart, etc. would not get to DVR pay back to go past the point where it had gone previously. Very frustrating! When It happened on one DVR, I thought it a peculiar quirk or a sign its hard drive might be having troubles. But then it happened on the other DVR with a different recording on a different date. What could be causing this? Is this a known problem? I.m new to Verizon FIOS.
