Returning Home Media DVR after 3 months trial

I am going to get Fios installed and opted to get the home media dvr free for 3 months. If after 3 months I dont want to keep it, do I have to return it or can I just keep using it as an hd receiver? If i have to return it, is it free or will I be charged for it?

You can have the media features disabled, and keep the unit as a HD-DVR.  If all you want is a standard HD-STB, you will have to return the unit, and get an HD-STB. I elected to keep the HD-DVR, and get rid of the media features, and I also returned the  2nd STB.

Verizon can send you a return label, or you can take the unit to most UPS Store's and they will pack up the unit and ship it back to Verizon for you. Either way you will need to talk to Verizon to get the billing sorted out.

home media dvr is a feature that you can switch on and off remotely, so when you're done with it, you should not have to return the stb, just make sure to call and have them remove the feature when the 3 months.

I know this has been answered but I just have to share my experience...

As one of the first in WA to have FiOS installed I was happy to get the HM-DVR free for a year. In reality, we have 3 DVR's and, as most know, you CAN NOT 'share' recorded programs with other DVR's. The photo, music and video sharing we already get free from our Samsung TV and/or BluRay player so paying an extra $5 a month for a third methodology is more than redundant. So, a year or so later, I call to cancel the HM-DVR feature and the fun begins. The first CSR I spoke with was very helpful in scheduling a truck roll to replace and re-program my 7216 HM-DVR with a 'standard' 7216 DVR despite my insistence that it was a software switch and no truck roll was required. I told them to cancel the request and called back a few minutes later to get a new and differently trained CSR. The next CSR I spoke with was absolutely positive that the 7216 HM-DVR would need to be replaced with a 'standard' 7216 DVR but would simply be shipped to me with a pre-paid return box/label. Better. I took this option in lieu of a wasted day waiting for a bewildered tech with no idea why they were at my front door (like the door-to-door FiOS salesman a few weeks ago with no clue I'd had it installed over a year ago). OK, an already long story short, a few days later Verizon called to make sure someone would be home for the 'installation' the following day. Arrggg! Despite the shock, this guy got it. I don't know from which dusty backwoods call center he came from but he listened to my story and simply arranged to have the software switch thrown and cancelled all the other tickets. Problem solved and it only took a week and at least four different people. Too bad they can't put the last guy on the "all these ports but none of them actually work" problem or maybe disk space... I'm done. Thanks for listening to my latest encounter!

I also had the Home Media feature 'switched off'. I won't go into all the details, but I found the home media software, and sharing of recorded programs just didn't work very well, and it was a significant source of aggravation.

Since most of my watching of the recorded programming was in another room, I just moved the DVR, and then no longer needed the 'home media' features.  The QIP6416-2 is a lot 'better behaved' now that I no longer use it to share media.

That got rid of both the aggravation, and reduced my bill.....

from your stories, i am getting the understanding that you kept the receiver as a DVR. but would I be able to keep the receiver as just a standard hd receiver? I ask because I see there are 3 receivers, 1 that works as 2. theres the sd, then the hd, then the hd-dvr, and then the home media dvr.

so what i want to know is if keep the hd-dvr and be able to use it just as a regular hd receiver or if that one has to be exchanged for a regular hd receiver

I am not 100% positive but I believe the that if you just want a HD STB you will have to have them ship one to you and it will come with a return label for your current box. You can have them flip the switch to shut off HM but it will still be a functioning DVR and you will have to pay for a HD DVR.

Perhaps one of the Verizon guys who monitor the forum can confirm this?

No.  It has to be returned if you don't want to pay $15.99/mo for the ability to record.  The regular HD receiver -- a different box -- is $9.99/mo.
