standby mode message whenI turn off TV

What does it mean that when I turn off my TV ( and STB ) a message flashes quickly that ' the STB is in standby mode, press MENU to watch FIOS TV'. Why does it do that?  How do I stop it from doing that? I did recently get the 1.62 upgrade if that matters. Is getting this message a bad thing?  Do I have something set up wrong? Thanks.

It's ok that it does that and you can't get it to go away. It was added with 1.6.2 and will display this when your TV is still on and the cablebox is off.

There's nothing wrong, it's just a silly message they put on there that serves no purpose.

That message is what the STB outputs when it is in standy and the TV is on.  So it appears because just before you turn off your TV, you turn off your STB and that message is displayed.

Try turning off just your STB (and leave the TV on) or turn on just your TV (and leave teh STB Off) and you will see that message on your TV.

I beg to differ about thisbeing a silly message. I have two TV's and STB. On both, there are occasions where, when powering down, the STP shuts down but not the TV. Formerly, I would not know this until the next day when I powered up the STB (and, as often as not, turned off the TV at the same time). In addition to the power wasted by leaving the TV on all night, it would frustrate members of my family who were trying to view the TV. Now, they are told immediately that the TV is still on, and they can take the neccessary corrective action. For us, this is far from a silly message, it is a solution to a problem that has plagued us since we got FIOS (and n Cablevision before that).

Score 1 for FIOS.

I acknowledge that for those who cannot tell whether their TV is on or off the message serves a vital purpose.

Personally, I would rather that the STB ACTUALLY TURN OFF when I turn it off.  Instead, it continues to draw almost the same amount of power as when it's "on", but simply stops passing a video signal to its output.  I'm sure that there is technology available to have the box power up internally for scheduled recordings.  THAT is an enormous energy-waster.

Simply put it means the Set-Top-Box is off and your TV is still on.

A universal remote (any, not just the Verizon provided one) can never be quite as good at communicating with your TV as the remote that came with the TV. This is the root cause of this “Power Sync” issue often when it arises. Press your finger on the power button less (a shorter duration) or more (a longer duration) until you get the exact touch that will turn off the TV. (usually a shorter duration, as the non-OEM remote may be sending the “power” command multiple times as you hold the button longer)

Another common solution using universal remotes is to use the device buttons at the top of the remote to direct commands to specific devices. Press “TV” then “Power”, then press “STB” (set-top-box) then “Power” for example. While universal remotes try to be intuitive enough to understand if you are watching cable TV (having pressed “STB” to do so) that you want to control things on BOTH the STB and the TV, changing channels on the STB and volume on the TV, and powering them both on and off. But because each TV manufacturer uses different remote codes this will be different in almost every home in America.

Now your TV may eventually go to “sleep” and turn itself off, this is why you may not have noticed this state in the past, until now, we put a sort of “screen saver” into the new update (see above post) which has a feed to your TV even when the STB is off.

I am writing about standby mode for a different reason.  I have a qip7100 box and am trying to bring up the user settings status  menu shown in the manual to optimize some settings particulary for a 4:3 hd tv.  The manual says to turn off st box and immediately hit menu on box  to make changes.  However, since the box is now in standby mode, when I hit menu, the box turns on.  How do I get around this to bring up the user settings status which I think can only work when box is off.

I think you press power select menu, one right after the other, off of the front of the box.

I have IMG 1.6.2 but I do not have a 7100 box, I have a 6416. I just tested getting the menu you are referring to on mine and no problem: leaving the TV on you turn the STB off, immediately hit OK first, then Menu, and the User Settings menu displays just fine.

Edit: I just remembered, not everyone separates the power on/off like I do, my post is using the buttons on the remote, not the STB.

Try it, I think it will work.

Could be a timing issue then between button presses.
