Transfer settings and contents to NEW DVR?

I had my Motorola DVR replaced once so I had to start from scratch and re-enter all my series recording settings. 

Is it possible to transfer settings from an old DVR to a new one?  How about the recordings themselves?

Given the problems I'm having with the DVR, I suspect I'll be facing this issue again...
