Verizon Fios install

I have some questions on the FIOS installation.

On the day the technician installs teh box. After Installing it, what would be the "output" from the box?

I recently renovated the house, and have all the wires running behind the walls. I purposely install and hook up 2 coaxial jacks, and 1 phone line in the laundry room (inside the garage) which connects upstairs, through out the house.

One of the coax jack is connected up to a 1 to 4 splitter in the Attic, and the 4 splitted output will go into each room coax jack seperately.

One of the Coax jack, goes up to the family room, and i would like to install my cable modem in this family room, and the cable modem will connect up my wireless router.

The main phone cable (cat3e) goes up to the main home security system, and from the same place of the home security system - it splits out to 3 seperate phone lines into 3 wall phone jacks so i can plug in a phone to use.

I read a little bit on the verizon website - and i "think" my setup may not work, becuaes the output frmo the Verizon FIOS box will be , 1 coaxial and 1 cat5 directly?   If so - is there anyway for FIOS ONT box to send out 2 Coax output, so i can use the existing setup with the Coax?

Can you let me know please.

We can definately help you out, but I'm a littled confused. Are you asking what the outputs are from the Set Top Box or the main FIOS Optical Network Terminal (ONT).

Two points:

1). The Optical Network Termination or ONT outputs either Cat5 or Coax, but not both at the same time. If you are getting FiOS Television, the output from the ONT MUST be Coax, as the Set Top Boxes require Coax to provide ethernet connectivity. The Set Top Boxes obtain authorization, video on demand, program guide and firmware upgrades via the Internet.

2). The splitters you have in place may not work for FiOS. MoCA (coax ethernet) places the signals well above the spectrum used for cable Television. Most splitters are only good up to 800Mhz (that is all that is required for normal Cable TV), you need bi directional 1Ghz splitters for FiOS service. Your Verizon Technician should be able to provide these splitters if he doesn't install them for you.

The ONT will feed your existing "coax" in house wiring.  You do need to make sure that any and all splitters are digitally rated 5-1000Mhz capable splitters and you can have no signal amplifiers anywhere in the mix.   Each TV will need to have Set-Top Box in order to decode and receive the TV channels -- these will be installed in whatever rooms you have TV's and range from 3.95/month (for a basic SD digital adapter) to $9.95 (for an HD box) plus an addition $5-$10 for each DVR box you ordered.

As you already have in-place Coax wiring, they will provisioning the Verizon router over Coax for internet and can place it anywhere there is an active coax outlet in your home.   If you plan to use an additional router behind the Verizon router, be advised that FiOS does not use a "modem" type technology with a transparent handoff -- instead you will need to either run your router in access point mode (sometimes called lan to lan) or transparent bridge mode if it supports it.  You can not remove the Verizon router from the mix if you have TV service as it performs an important bridging function to the internet which allows your STB's to get their guide data, etc.

For your telephone, they will also use the existing in-house wiring and no additional changes are needed.

The technician will install the ONT at a point where your existing cable and telephone service enters the home and will disconnect the existing feeds from your cable and phone provider and hook them up to the ONT as part of the installation.

Lastly, be advised that you need a power outlet nearby where the ONT will be installed on the interior side of the wall (the ONT will usually be mounted outside and they will drive a hole thru the wall and run a small power cable thru the wall to connect to a battery backup unit which will be installed inside the home near the external ONT installation location.   (There are other installation models including an entirely internal one, but the one I describe seems to be most common with typical single family dwellings).

I was referring to the ONT.

Thanks for the info.

I am getting TriplePlay, so it will have TV, INernet and Phone.

So this is what i have in the Laundry waiting for the technician.

- I have 2 Coax cable in the laundry room waiting to be connected up to ONT.
- I have a phone wire (Cat3e) in laundry room waiting to be connected up to ONT.

- I alreayd have power oulet and space next to where i want the ONT to be.

One of the Coax in laundry room goes up to the attic, and it has a 1 to 4 splitter. ( I will double check on the mhz)

One of the coax in laundry room goes up to the family room coax outlet.  I want to connect the "verizon cable modem" in this family room to this coax outlet.

The phone line in laundry room will just get connected in the laundry room to the ONT.

The "Free Wifi router" which verizon provides, is it the "Verizon cable modem"?  A post below mentioned that verizon do not use the "cable modem" type.  As a prev time warner customer, i know it uses a Cable Modem which takes Coax, and spit out Cat5 to my router.  How does the "Verizon Cable Modem" or "Verizon Wifi Router" gets connected?

Thansk,

What is the "input" to the verizon router, and what is the "output"?

I was hoping to place the verizon router in my family room , where as teh TV Coax goes up in the attic.  The Coax for Verizon Router, and the Coax for TV in attic, are not connected. Will it work?

Thanks.

The TV coax and the coax that the Verizon router use must all be part of the same cable plant ... the TV signals travel on the coax below the 900Mhz range while the internet and LAN signals (feeding the set top boxes for guide data, etc.) travel in the 1000Mhz-1100Mhz range and all connect back to the ONT which will be installed.

corrections: vod, guide and firmware upgrades DO NOT COME FROM THE INTERNET but rather the fios ip network. it never ever hits the public internet. splitters made and installed in the past 15 years are all rated 1ghz not 800mhz. cable systems are 750 or 860mhz but splitters that they installed are all 1ghz.
