View DVR recorded programs on a notebook/PC

  Hello,

I've had the FIOS service for a couple of weeks and am pretty happy with it.  I have the Motorola DVR 7216 box and was wondering if it was possible to view recorded programs on a PC through the browser or something.  I'd just like to be able to use my wireless notebook to watch programs that I recorded from elsewhere in the house or on my deck.

Is there a way to do this or will they be possibly implementing that feature in the future?  It seems like it should be there, what with the DVR box getting an IP address on my home network and all.

Thanks.

At this time there is no way to transfer the recordings wirelessly. the only way to transfer any pic to the computer is to use the computer like a tv. your computer would need a video capture card and a wire to connect to the stb to the computer.

As for future options, who knows. but I would tend to doubt it as there is still a lot of debate about the copyrights and the link to the computers as they dont want you to be able to broadcast the tv signal over the internet. Similar to the whole napster issue with music a few years ago.

I actually use my xbox360 to do this -- I THINK (keyword there) they have this in beta testing right now for the media manager...believe I remember reading something about that.  I have no clue what video formats are currently being tested since I am not participating in this.

At this time, the ability to download or transfer recordings wirelessly is a "TiVo exclusive" feature.  You'd have to buy a TivoHD to get that functionality.

Verizon could add DTCP-IP protected streaming with a server implementation of DLNA 2.0, but I doubt that is something we will see on the existing hardware.  Hopefully, Verizon will support  that capability on future hardware in a few years.

Well, I didn't want to transfer anything from the DVR, I just wanted to be able to use my notebook to view the programs I recorded over my home network through the browser or something.  Also, how am I "broadcasting" over the internet when I am only opening a file on the DVR hard drive over my PRIVATE home network?

Yeh, not possible at this time.  Closest thing would be a program like ORB or Winamp Remote but that's just for media files on another computer.

I didnt mean that YOU were broadcasting, but the moment anyone is able to send the signal from the dvr to the the computer, then you COULD broadcast it and there in lies the problem.  It's the possibility that it may be an issue, and with the problems that other companies like napster went through have these guys gunshy. Not that we would missuse it, but the possiblity exists and that is the problem

Sorry about that spacedebris, didn't mean to sound mean or anything, its just kinda frustrating that simple features like this aren't available.  Looks like I'm gonna invest in a slingbox then.  From what I've been reading, it looks like it will work for what I would like to do as well as over the internet.  Thank all.
