When will Fios have a New Multi (more then 2) Turner DVR? They told me many months ago it would be by end of year. Well that time is approaching and so far I heard nothing else.
Other companys have more then 2 turners. Dish has the Hopper 6 shows at once.

Verizon, who just battled tivo in court is now battling the fcc who is not allowing verizon to go foward with their planned 6 tuner fios tv media server where certain standards have to be met first before verizon can go foward with it. All tv companies have been mandated to comply with a open home networking standard before december 1, 2012 where verizon has asked that it be postponed by 18 months until the middle of 2014 so verizon can launch their fios tv media server that will allow for multiple tuners to be used by their fios tv customers. The original launch date was for december 2012 but like most things with verizon it has been postponed. It is a very tricky thing that is currently being held up in court where there will be appeals filed that will further delay the implementation of that media server so no one should expect it until the middle of 2013 if verizon loses their appeals. There are many tv providers who have multiple tuners like at&t who has four tuners for their boxes, dish network has 6 and directv has 5 but verizon like a lot of cable companies has only 2.

Although satellite can have >2 tuners, looks like cable companies like Verizon and Comcast, etc.
play by different set of rules. Looks like Verizon is ready to go... but regulations are holding
technology back....
Deploying a new DVR with just more tuners costs money and will in all liklihood be obsoleted by
a whole house media server....
Looks like Vz wants to leapfrog to whole house media server with 6 tuners plus distribution to IP devices like
Smart Phones, IP TVs, Roku Boxes, Smart Blu-Ray players, etc. all done across the IP network Given the
12 bucks a month I pay for an HD STB even though its hooked to a Smart TV connected to a GigE network, the
home media server sounds like a step in the right direction.
Thanks so much for the info guys. I was told by fios that these media servers would be here at end of 2012. Looks like that info was correct. When I called the other day asking what happened to these boxes are they out yet. The person answering the phone had no idea what I was talking about. You would think they would be trained to know.
Anyway it never occured to me that there would be a legal matter. Cable vision has had their cloud based system for awhile now. They went through the courts and won. So I thouht it was just a matter of making the system

Since Cablevision is smaller then Fios. You would think Fios wants to have more then 2 turners. Also Cablevision is a cable company. So why can they have it and Fios can not?

joker211, if I fully understand what I read it is more than "cloud storage" like you showed.
Its a new paradigm for distributing video within your home. With the Verizon Media Server, not
only is it a whole home DVR, but you would use it to "serve" or stream to all your IP (Internet Protocol)
devices. Your IP devices reside on your WiFi and wired home network, These include laptops,
desktops, cell phones, internet players (like Roku), Smart TV's (like Samsung), Smart BluRay players.
All these devices could stream video directly from the Verizon Media Server across from home IP network.
So you could have app running on your smart phone that is streaming an HBO channel from your Verizon Server
just like you watch HBO at your TV with a set top box (STB).
Right now if you ran a Netflix app on your Playstation it streams video from a far away Netflix server thru
the internet to your home. What Verizon envisions, is you stream an On-Demand move to your Playstation going
through the Verizon Media Server. And yes, they start to put competitive pressure on Netflix, Hulu, etc....
Throw in Smart TVs (i.e. Internet/app capable) and you no longer need set top boxes as all video including live
TV channels are streamed through the Server (that is why you need 6 tuners). With the right TVs and Blu-Ray players
you would only have one piece of Vz gear in your home... the Home Media Server. No more STBs.
Now where it gets sticky is that the FCC realizes that this type of equipment can force out competition, so they are requiring that whatever method is used to distribute on the IP network in your home be an industry standard so that 3rd parties can plug'n'play with the Verizon gear and allow you to mix equipment that you rent and can buy from others.
But, these industry standards have not been finalized making it hard for the Verizon Server from Motorola to
meet this government mandate and so Vz is asking for waiver.... hence the legal stuff....

I have 1 smart tv and a couple of older ones. The two older ones are NOT HD but SD. They get 480i. Waiting for them to break. You would be suprised that 480i is not a bad picture at all. Although it does not hdmi. It does have compoent hook us.
I guess I am tired of fighting for record time. I would be thrilled with 4 tuners. I guess Fios is by passing that and going into 6 turners.
The way you are reading it. Does the box have its own Hard Drive or is it through there own servers. Or am I understanding that this MEDIA box will be the server for my house and thus has a Hard drive?

Box must exist as if they had planned on Dec. 2012 deploy, then testing of first units had to begin many months ago.
Delay seems to be strictly government/legal....
My total guess.. Is that it will have internal HD for storage and that it can function as DVR and as temp storage for
On-Demand (maybe). Would guess at least 1TB minimum.
As far as 6 tuners, I wonder if each active device will use up a tuner. So if I am watching NBC on my SmartTV (thats 1 tuner), DVR recording 2 shows (now I'm up to 3 in use), little Mary watching Sesame Street on her room TV (thats 4 total), and the wife is streaming an HBO movie to her iPad (thats 5 total).... For a large video addicted house, 6 might not be enough.....

joker, on the cablevision implementation of cloud DVR storage I heard they were going to be working with the providers to allow fast forward/rewind of DVR shows.
One ruling I heard is to allow cloud storage FF must be disable. Not sure how true this is but something to ponder.
