Yamaha Remote Code???

I just purchased a new Yamaha home theater system with a Yamaha HTR-6140 receiver and I cannot program my Fios remote control to turn it on or off.  I have used all the yamaha codes in the Fios manual, scanned for the right code, and even called tech support but no codes seem to work!!  I even talked to Yamaha support and they said the codes were different depending on the remote control manufacturer and that they couldn't help me.  Anyone who has this receiver can you please help or tell me where I can go to find the right code???  It doesn't make sense to have to manually turn this component on/off when I can control all other components with my remote.

I also have the Yamaha system. What I use is the Logitec Harmony 550. It was $42.99 at Best Buy. I have not found a function yet that did not work. It will control up to 15 devices.

My setup in the living room is:

Yamaha Home Theater YHT-690B (same receiver as yours)

Samsung 52" LCD LN52A650 (HDMI from the Yamaha)

Panasonic DMP-BD35K Blu-Ray  (HDMI into the Yamaha)

Verizon Multi-Room DVR  (HDMI into the Yamaha)

JVC VCR (Composit video to TV and audio to Yamaha- will be getting a new unit soon)

Logitec Harmony 550 to control everything. All other remotes are put away.

Not all TV will work with the Verizon remote. I have a Vizo that will not. Sorry but its a sad fact universal remotes are not always universal. You can all was get a harmony remote but they run $100 plus.

I have the same issue, I have a Yamaha receiver as well. The problem with Yamaha is that they have two signals, one for turn on and on for turn off. Most gear have a power which toggles. I did find a code that does perform the power off function but not the power on. My time Warner remote did the same type of thing, though it would power on the receiver just by selecting it on the top of the remote.

If you don't mind, how do you map the propeitary functions of the verizon remote to the Harmony? Is it inuitive(wife friendly) to use? buttons like the widgets and the DVR. How about the reciever functions like changing the surrond settings? I have some gift money to spend, maybe I'll pickup the harmony.

Thanks,

Here is the link to where you can veiw or download the user manual for the Verizon remote you have.

 http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSTV/Remote+Controls/SetUp/SetUp.htm

There you can find the procedure to have your remote search all codes to find the one that will work with your Yamaha. That is the procedure i used for my Yamaha before i bought a Harmony 670.

For example, the method for searching all code using the remote for the Scientific-Atlanta AT8550 can be found on pages 7, 8 and 9 of the users manual.

It is very simple. You install the software for the remote onto your computer and then connect the remote via USB to the computer and customize whatever you want. You can map custom keys and all. Logitec has a very large database of devices and if for some reason the device you have is not in the database the Harmony remote has a learing function where you aim your old remote at it and follow the step by step onscreen directions.

Like I said I use the 550 but there are about 10 different Harmony models to choose from. The 550 is very easy to use and my girlfriend and kids have had no problem using it once I had it all setup. There is a button labeled Activities, I have 6 different activities setup on mine and when I select one it will turn off any device not used and place the needed devices into the correct input modes automaticly.

Here is a link to all of the Harmony remotes for you to look at.

Thanks for suggestion to buy a Harmony 550.  Unfortunately, the 550 is no longer available at Best Buy or anywhere else I can find for the incredible $42.99 price.  Instead I've ordered a Harmony 520 for $39.99 which hopefully will do the trick.  I did try a cheaper Universal Remote Control R7 from Best Buy but its performance was less than adequate and I returned it.  The Logitech Harmony remotes are universally reviewed as the best but its hard to pay $100 or more for a remote control.

I think that the database that Logitec uses for codes is shared to all of the remotes they make. There is not alot of difference between the 550, 510 & 52. The 510 & 520 are the models that replaced the 550.

So how did it work for you? What are your thoughts?

I have been using the Harmony 520 for about a week now and it works perfectly.  It was very easy to program and controls my Yamaha receiver, Ipod dock, Toshiba 40RV525U tv, Toshiba DVD player, Verizon/Mortorola HD set top box, and Sony CD player.  What a relief to only have to use one remote!  Thanks again for your advice.
