parental/usage controls are not available on any smartphone that vzw offers. It's not too big of a surprise that they're not available on the iphone.

are you sure? i just started adding these features to my line just to see, and it was letting me add everything (i have a smartphone). i stopped just short of accepting the terms and conditions (because i din't want to be charged and don't really want to use them). so i guess it may have let me know that i couldn't use these features after accepting the terms...but i was expecting my verizon to stop me well before that point if you can't use the features on a smartphone.

there's an app for that..safe browser with internet filters and parental controls to be exact...$5 bucks if ya really want it..all you need to do is install it..then put a restriction on safari..and have the browser you just paid for be the default browser..simple as that..and of course you can block calls/numbers..i did it the day i got this phone..research a little before making a statement..

that's good info. but what if the user switches the default browser? do the restrictions become useless? it also still seems like the original poster should be able to use a verizon service on a verizon phone without tweaking the phone to use a third party service.

if the user is capable of switching the default browsers (even though i think he could put a password lock on it)..if he's capable of switching default browsers..then whats stopping him from downloading new browsers and using those to do things his parents dont want him seeing..if he can get around that, he can get around pretty much anything..

kids are smart/inventive these days..especially when they want something, they'll get it..even if verizon/apple did allow a parental control on say specfic browser, safari..he can go right ahead and download one of the many free browser apps..so hard to say what really can/could be parental controlled...

Last time I checked all you had to do to block texts/calls from specific numbers, you just needed to do it in MyVerizon. There is an option as soon as you log in.

And I am in agreement with the whole children don't need an iPhone thing. What's wrong with an enV or something? I didn't upgrade to a smartphone until I was over 18, and that was my own choice. Nobody NEEDS internet, unless you're on a corporate account. I have it as a luxury that I can afford as a 22 year old adult. I most certainly did not need it at 16 or younger, had the technology been available.

Unfortunately, this option to block texts and calls is only available to every phone on Verizon except the iPhone for now.

I said usage controls. Not blocking numbers. You can block numbers, but the usage controls such as minute allowances/time restrictions/etc are not available on smartphones.

Yes, the quote I posted was from the Usage Controls FAQs. Although, usage controls are mainly for kids, and if a kid needs usage controls on their phone, I doubt a smartphone would be the best phone for them.

The iPhone has usage controls.  You can download a browser and lock out downloading apps, and deleting of apps.  Would be kind of a pain, but they would have to go through you to uninstall, and install apps, but at least you know what's on their devices.  The drawback would be they could restore the device, BUT if you check their phones from time to time you would know that's what they are doing.

They were available on my last phone, which was a smart phone......just saying.

I also had usage controls checked in my plan when I bought my phone and no message appeared that the feature was not compatable with the iphone.  I may have not bought the phone had I known I was unable to block callers...

Had you continued to accept the terms & conditions, you would have been advised Usage Controls are in fact not compatible with the iPhone 4.

Thanks,
