Unable to Use Verizon's Speed Test

Hello,

I contacted Verizon's Tech Support 2 weeks ago regarding my broadband speed .  The technician took over my computer and attempted to check my speed using Verizon's Speed Test.  However, whenever she clicked continue to start the test, Internet Explorer closed down.  She made 4 attempts and each resulted in a closed browser.  I suggested using another browser or another speed test, but was told she was only allowed to use Verizon's Speed Test in Internet Explorer.

This morning I attempted to use the Verizon Speed Test in Internet Explorer as the Administrator, with the same results.

Does anyone have a clue as to why this is happening?

Not sure why that is.  I just check on my system and it working fine.  What browser are you using? Version? Did you enable activeX when internet explorer asked?

There are better sites to use for speedtest aswell like http://speedtest.net and http://myspeed.visualware.com

Good morning Charles,

Thanks for replying.

The technician used Internet Explorer, which only supports Verizon's Speed Test, according to Verizon's tech support.  I am using IE 7 and we were not prompted for an active x.

I realize there are other speed tests since I employ them for my personal use. However, I wanted to know why my browser shuts down whenever I use Verizon's Speed Test.

Interesting - This is the first time I have heard of this happening actually.  Not sure if you had tried this yet, try to reset all of internet explorer's settings by going to Tools -> Advanced -> click on "Reset..."

I tried it in IE8 and received the following message from Verizon:

The application you are trying to access does currently NOT support your Browser.

So I tried it in Firefox 3.5.1 and it worked.

As I mentioned earlier, it was Verizon's technician who initially had the problem with the Verizon speed test.  After she took control of my computer, the very first thing she did was go into Internet Options clear all the caches and reset everything to default (except the addons), which made me very unhappy.  In any event, it was after this that she attempted the speed tests.  After the third unsuccessful attempt I questioned whether another browser could be used.  She said no, only IE.

I only posted the issue hoping someone had a similar experience and discovered the culprit.  But as you stated there are other speed tests I can use.

Thank you for your assistance,

Cora,

Is this the link you are using for the Verizon Speed Test:

http://www2.verizon.net/micro/speedtest/hsi/

I just tried the Verizon speed test under IE 7 and Firefox 3.0.7 on Windows XP SP3 and it ran just fine under both browsers. And the two runs gave just about the same reports, 19.5 down and 4.7 up, which is ok with me for my 20/5 service.

I think the reason the Verizon CSR said IE only is that Verizon puts some pretty severe restrictions on what software they can use, on their computers at work and on customer computers. That way they only need to be trained on that software, and they hopefully won't accidentally screw something up.

I have no idea what functions or software the speed test is using, but I know some speed tests use Java, so maybe you should check to see if you are allowing that in your browser. Or it might be JavaScript, or Flash, or maybe something else. Maybe one of the Verizon folks here can see if there are any known software dependencies or required browser settings for Verizon's test.

Sorry, but that is the best I can do.

I was searching for the speed test to try it with the Fire Fox browser when I came across the following notice:

http://www22.verizon.com/residentialhelp/fiosinternet/account+tools/fios+tools/questionsone/85778.ht...?

It appears you must have a fios account to use Verizon's speed test.  I did notice it is now called Verizon Fios Speed test. Duh!

Hello Brian,

I just recognized your reply and tried that test also.  My browser closed immediately after I clicked continue.  I guess this will remain a mystery until I or someone figures it out one day.

Thank you for your assistance.

Cora,

It seems like it is a moving target.

In the past I was ONLY able to run it from IE, now I can only run it from FireFox.

I usually use DSLR (http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?java=1) and Speedtest (http://www.speedtest.net/index.php), which seem pretty reliable.I rarely use the Verizon Speed test.
