How much are you paying and are your stats consistant ?

I did not know Verizon had a 7 mb plan.

The network status page tells you what speed your modem/router has been able to successfully negotiate with the Central Office Equipment. That is the actual speed of the link between the Modem and the Central office, and is the lesser of either the speed Verizon provisioned you for, or the highest speed the copper pair between you and the Central Office can support.

All Verizon has provided is the on/off ramp to the Internet. There are innumerable things that can degrade that performance. In adequate size and number of buffers, firewalls, encryption, network congestion, and even bandwidth limitations at the other end.

You have contracted for 7mbps/768kb service, and it looks like that is what Verizon has provided.

If you haven't run Verizon High Speed Internet Optimizer, you probably should, or should run a similar program from another source to insure that you are set up to use all of the available speed. You might also want to run a speed test that includes a network analysis, such as the one from the Argonne National Laboratory

It gives a great deal of information about your connection, and where the bottlenecks are.
