Major Issues

Hi, I have been having a major issue with my DSL over the past few days, and it is driving me insane. I have a 3mb/768k connection and for the past few days it has been functioning at a fraction of its speed for many of the things that I need to do. One of the things that has been really confusing to e is that Speedtest.net shows its speed as functioning properly for the most part, but as soon as I try to connect to many things I often have a latency of 600ms-2500ms, making many applications unusable.  I will include a tracert showing how it has been functioning. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?

#3 If you don't know how to get that info:

a) What is the brand and model of your modem?

b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

I don't know how to find the Transceiver Statics, but my modem is an Actiontec GT704WGB

To get the Transceiver Statistics

#1 Go to 192.168.1.1

#2 Then go to Status

#3 Type in the current user name and password of the router. If you did change them: The default user name is admin and the default password is password.

#4 In Status, go to DSL Status.

#5 Post that info that you get from there.

Verizon should be running that line at 10-15Mbps, not 3Mbps. It's completely free to go from 3Mbps to 10Mbps or 15Mbps, as it's the same exact package.

Is the high latency occurring while maxing your download or upload out, and are you getting the correct speeds that you should be getting? What you could be seeing is saturation and latency caused by buffering, as the data makes it's way from point A to B via your connection.

Sadly in my area the fastest I am eligible for is 3mbps 😞

The weird thing with the latency is that my speeds seem to be normal when I run speedtests, though with some things it seems like it just cannot connect. I first thought it was a firewall or something on my system that was blocking the connection, but I have since tried it on other things and it gives me the same results.

Let's see if we can get that speed higher and also see if there's some trouble on the backend. Sending some contact info to you. Most COs with ADSL2+ DSLAMs like the one you're coming out of have the capacity available for at least 7Mbps, which even the old ADSL DSLAMs can do. I don't know about remotes running ADSL2+, but I know some of the very old Litespan remotes (such as the one I come out of, which is a type of remote made by Alcatel Lucent) are serving up to 7Mbps speeds, which was unhead of 6 months ago.

With the connection issues, are there specific sites that tend to do it the most? Have you also tried other DNS servers just to see if that helps reduce the amount of trouble you have loading up resources? If not, I recommend using servers such as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 on at least one of your computers.

I haven't tried another DNS server yet, I think I'll do that right now. I haven't noticed any certain sites that seem to be affected, I'll post back and let you know if the DNS change helps.

Sadly the DNS didn't help 😕

I was thinking of how I could show you what has been happening, so I took a screencap of two programs that I've been having issues with. These screencaps were taken a few hours apart, with me resetting my modem every 10 minutes or so until it seems to fix the problem with whatever I'm trying to use at the time.

This first one it seems to be loading my DayZ servers alright, though Mumble is constanty 500-800ms

After resetting my modem while doing offline things, it now is connecting to Mumble just fine, but now the same servers as above are around 500-800ms.

Right now I have them both working fine, but other applications still don't work like they are supposed to, and I am afraid to reset my modem again because chances are one of these two will go back to being unusable. This is very frustrating, and I don't have any idea how to fix it 😕
