Update--

Was finally able to escalate the issue to a network specialist tonight, after tech did remote to one of my machines and again verified that download speed was under 1.0 mbps.  From their end, speed showed 7.4 mbps.  Now (8 p.m.) my download speed is 0.5 mbps and dropping.

This morning it was 6.7 mbps.

Network specialist says it may take a few days to unravel the problem but will call me back.  Will let this list know when that happens, and if so, what was discovered.

just use Verizon's own speedtest webpage: www.verizon.net/speedtest And my result is : Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done SendBufferSize set to [8192] running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 661.12Kb/s running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 703.01kb/s Packet size is preserved End-to-End I mean, go use it. Whenever the tech support guys give you their "terminal testing", just show them the results. Someone remind please what plan I've paid for again? Ah right, it's the 4M-7M turbo plan. I mean, I'm not quite sure if I misread the "turbo" part, I guess it's turtle no?

I ran a trace route last night during my slow speed run and it seems the culprit is ge-6-1-0-0.SJC7-PEER-RTR1.verizon.gni.net [130.81.17.229]..   During non-peak hours my trace route thru there is 40ms.   and During the slow periods it is 106ms or more.   I forwared this info to a verizon employee.  I hope they resolve this quickly.  Its now going on 17 days.

{please keep it relevant}

Others need to know this is happening to more than just a few of us.

I did the NID, still the same result, I firmly believe this is a Verizon issue now. It's been happening ever since I got the home internet service, I regret now getting this serivce, I thought their home internet service would be as good as their wireless service, but apprently, I am so, so wrong

Well, I thought DSL is not "shared" bandwidth. I thought DSL could perform better than Cable does. And obviously, I'm so wrong as well.

Hello All,

I had the exact same problem with slow DSL in the evenings (but full speed in the mornings). I was able to get the problem successfully resolved by posting my issue in the Verizon Direct forums at dslreports.com http://www.dslreports.com/forum/vzdirect . I would recommend reading the description of how the forum works here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/267?rules=Rules%3F and then start a new post with the necessary information.

I had to answer a few questions that I knew were irrelevant, but I prefer doing that in a forum rather over the phone. And the Verizon tech that I worked with was very intelligent, responsive and helpful. A few posts back and forth, and I came home to full speed Internet today.

Update again -

I promised to report back when resolution obtained, and here I am.

VZ finally decided to send a tech out to the house, and when he could find no issues there he had the network specialists switch my DSL to a different circuit.

Now on second evening, the problem seems to have been resolved.  Upload at 6.5 mbps all evening.... so far.

Hurray!

So I tried the ksharris1 way and went to dslreports/vzdirect.  There I met a really helpful verizon tech.  The problem was that i have an active supervisor ticket so he was unable to help me but was able to provide me with alot of good info.  So therein lies the problem  .  After providing them with numerous screen shots of Traceroutes and speedtests it was evident that I was the victim of a congested router.  So today I got the supervisor customer intervention team on the phone.  I asked that  they call the maintenance control office and move me from the congested router.  Network team said NO. I have an appointment for a tech to come to my house on the 26th of Oct.   Hmmm and what will he find.  NOT A **bleep** THING.  Just like the 4 guys before him.  So I demanded they bridge me on with the network team. NO is what i was told.  I would like their supervisor then.  No is what I was told.  I then said well get them back on the line tell them the customer is irate and if they dont move me off the congested router today, I will be canceling my service.   Guess what the network team said.          they said   NO.   I guess they no longer want me as a customer.   I have had the same Phone # with Verizon for over 40+ years.  I guess I will be calling Charter Communications on Monday.      They run their line tests during the day.  Well the line is fine during the day.  The problem is it happens in the evening.  Apparently their supervisors and network team dont work past 6pm pst.   Funny I work for the other bell company and I work past 6pm,  shoot I have been at work for 36hrs straight some times.   And the fact that when I want to talk to a supervisor I am told NO.

Just at the end of my rope and hope in the future.

goodnight all.

hey I have the same problem but I am suppose to get 10-15Mbps but after 7:00pm here is what I get:

I am suppose to get 10-15MPS but every night after 7:00pm I get dial up speed. Now I am to be stupid and believe what they say that it is at my end. Well, how is that even possible? That my computer slows down at that time? Well, I have 5 and only use one at a time as each is for a different function. That would mean that all five computers slow down at those times as we tested them all. Being a computer repair person and tech, I was very surprised that they even would say it is at my end. So, we did another test with 4 different routers 2 nights in a row and got the same slow speeds. Then I am asked about the phones being used, well, they are not being used at all and during the test they are unplugged. I did get Verizon tech to look at this and was told they would have the problem fixed but that did not happen yet. Verizon put a new box on the outside and I had new lines ran inside with only 2 phone jacks in the house as the DSL is on a dedicated line. I am sure someone knows what is happening and it is time I find out what it is. Below are the results of my speed test for tonight:

IP                            DATE               TIME           DOWNLOAD SPEED            UPLOAD SPEED         PING        CITY                 MILES

74.99.167.195 8/7/2011    8:19 PM","EDT"        0.99-Mbps                                  0.90-Mbps              45     Baltimore, MD       50

"74.99.167.195 8/7/2011 10:21 PM","EDT"        0.96-Mbps                                 0.90-Mbps               55    Baltimore, MD       50

"74.99.167.195 8/7/2011 10:25 PM","EDT",       1.17-Mbps                                 0.87Mbps                55    Baltimore, MD       50

"74.99.167.195 8/7/2011 10:27 PM","EDT"        0.97-Mbps                                 0.89Mbps                45    Baltimore, MD       50

Now I am suppose to get 10-15Mbps and during the day I get up to 13Mbps but as soon as it gets around 7:0pm until midnight I get the above and it is every night. The results are from speedtest.net. I did not even get 1.5Mbps. From now on I will post the day time and the evening speeds. I will also give anyone my login at speedtest.net to verify these results if needed or wanted. Yes, we tried various speed test locations and the same shows at all.

Sounds like the usual case of congestion during the night at the CO since it jives right along with when peak usage tends to be. Visit DSLReports and using their Verizon Direct forum, ask for them to check the circuits your connection routes through for congestion during that time. If they see congestion they should immediately move you to another one that is less utilized.
