Why is my DSL connection %95 slower than the rest of the nation?

I began to notice a decline a couple months ago in my ability to view online video. Everything out there told me I have malware, virus, registry problems, or one of those kinds of issues. I have scanned and re-scanned and re-re-scanned till my eyes are falling out of their sockets and nothing has appeared. I have doubled the amount of ram, and I still can't watch an online video with out it coming to a stop every 5-7 seconds.

Lately it has gotten worse. Finally it dawns on me that just maybe its my connection itself. I go to www.speedtest.com and lo and behold it gives me an F- for a grade, and then tells me my connection speed is lower than 95% of the rest of the nation..

I have no idea what to do, none.

Smith,  first and foremost. I want to to thank you. I do appreciate everything you have done here. I really do, even though none of it led to anything except the part about restoring my system.

Are you sitting down? I have an answer to all this now, and maybe it will also help you in the future should you ever run into this model of modem again. If that should ever happen, you don't need to do anything except tell the person who is unfortunate enough to have one that there is nothing you can do to help them. Not one thing because its entirely up to them to get a different one.

I was finally able to get a Verizon tech over here, and as soon as he saw it the first thing he said was that, "modem is no good. Its outdated and simply does not work anymore."

When you consider that I called Verizon a few times, and the very most they were able to accomplish over the phone was tell me I have a bad line. Keep in mind, they also knew the model because that was the first thing they asked. And then realize no one had ever told this tech that came over what the model was. If they had, he could have saved himself the trip.

Are we surprised that a communications company like Verizon appears to have a communication problem with in its own system?  I don't think so..lol

Please post the transceiver statistics from your modem/router.

DSL performance is subject to a number of issues. The first is the quality of the copper pair that connects you to central office.

The transceiver statistics will tell us about that.

After that there can be capacity and equipment issues within Verizon's infrastructure, or outside Verizon's (the rest of the Internet). We need to start somewhere to figure out what is going, and the trnansceiver stats are a good place to start

I am not sure if this is what you mean by tranceiver statistics, because every time i try to get that i get an error page from verizon

Something else I should mention is that while i was doing this I find out that my westell modem  B90 2100 15 04 needs to be updated. Ok, now  I've really gone and done it.  While I am trying to find help here, I run into the Verizon online connection optimizer thing. And used it. I figured what could it hurt right

That's what I get for thinking. Because the next time I restarted after I let it do its thing, my computer went into a loop. By that I mean when I try to start it now, it starts up like it should and always has, right up to the point where my desktop lights up, all my short cuts appear, the anti virus kicks in and then it shuts down to start up again.

And now that is all it does. Like what I just described above except it does it over and over over again. I am screwed right now , and I really need help bad here. This is a disaster, and I am completely at a loss.

I am using an older slower computer to write this with in case you are wondering  how I did this. Please help. If you could even point me in the right direction that would be very helpful.

And this forum is messed up too. Because every time I go to post this response it tells me to correct the hightlighted areas. But there are no highlighted areas for me

If anything, you should be able to run System Restore from within Safe Mode on Windows, if the computer just keeps restarting itself. Before you see the animated Windows XP logo after you turn your PC on, press F8 and a Black and White menu should come up. Choose "Safe Mode" using your keyboard's Arrow Keys and press Enter. Windows will load up using the base necessities needed to get the operating system running, and from there, you can proceed to run System Restore. If you are able to reach the Desktop, which you should, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and choose System Restore. Restore the machine back to the last restore point, either before the Verizon Optimizer or to a day before this incident.

Once that is done, the PC will restart and attempt to boot normally. See if things are solved from there in regards to the rebooting issue.

The second issue in regards to speed; on any one of your working PCs, visit http://192.168.1.1/ , assuming you are plugged into the Verizon modem/router directly and tell us the speed your modem is reporting. Getting the Transceiver Statistics is another story, so if you can tell us which modem you are currently using, that would be a step in the right direction.

Okay, thanks for responding. I had forgotten how to get into safe mode. Its been that long since I've had any kind of problem..

It appears as though system restore worked sir. I thank you sincerely for that.

I did say what kind of modem. I'll say again.

westell B90 2100 15

And that link that you give. That's the one that kept giving me an error message. But instead of the error message it tells me the page won't load now.

I am also plugged in thru a router

I am guessing that I need to start this thread over again. The link that Smith6612 gives here does not work. Every time I clik it I get the "cannot connect message".

His solution for System Restore from Safe Mode worked. So at the very least the down computer is working again because of that. But I still have the speed problem. And speed test is still telling me that my connection is slower than 95% of the nation, and they gave me an F- again.

Matheww says to post tranciever statistics, but I am unable to find out how or where to get that info from.

"Web 100 reports the Round trip time"

                  it does say

No packet loss - but packets arrived out-of-order 0.91% of the time

This connection is receiver limited 4.3% of the time.

Increasing the the client's receive buffer (63.0 KB) will improve performance

This connection is sender limited 83.00% of the time.

This must mean something to someone, I am just not that someone,

All it means to me is that my connection sucks canal water.

Plug your PC directly into the Westell, taking the router out of the mix for the meantime. From here, you will need to do one of two things, based on how the PC responds.

1: If the PC displays full connectivity to the Westell and you are able to browse the Internet, visit http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm and you should see the modem's Transceiver Statistics. If you receive a 404 error, visit http://192.168.1.1/ and mouse over Troubleshooting, and then choose Transceiver Statistics. If you are unable to connect to the Westell despite having Internet connectivity, open up command prompt and type in the following:

ipconfig

In the ipconfig output, you will see the IP address for the default Gateway. That IP, if it is a 192.168.*.* address, will be your modem. If it is not a 192.168.*.* address, but is instead another address such as 10.*.*.*, you might have a direct connection to the Internet.

Command Prompt can be opened by using Start > run and typing in cmd, or by searching for cmd from the Start Menu Search box.

2: If the PC says Limited or No Connectivity, your modem is most likely bridged and you will need to assign your PC a Static IP address to reach the Westell. To do this, open up the Network Connections folder, inside of the Windows Control Panel and select the Network Adapter you are using to connect to the Westell (Local Area Connection). Right click that connection, choose Properties, and look in the Properties Window something that says "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP)" or "TCP/IP (Internet Protocol)." Select that protocol and then choose Properties for that protocol. In the Properties Window, you will see an option for manaually configuring the IP address of the PC. Select that option, taking the PC off of Automatically Obtaining the IP address, and then enter in the following information:

IP address: 192.168.1.200

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

You do not need DNS servers in this case. Select OK to close out the Properties Window, and then press OK out of the Adapter properties.

From this point your PC should have a Static IP. Open your Web Browser and attempt to visit http://192.168.1.1/ again, which should bring up a Westell page allowing you to get the Transceiver Statistics. They can be obtained using the instructions I provided above in #1.

Once you've obtained the Statistics, Change your TCP/IP settings back to "Automatically Obtain IP Addres" and also ensure "Automatically Obtain DNS Servers" is selected as well, save the settings, and then reconnect your PC and router as to how they were before.

Smith Im really sorry to tell you this but none of that worked.

PC says Limited or No Connectivity,  So I did what you said. But I had no connection when I did that so I couldn't check the Transceiver Statistics.

Im at a total loss now. Any other ideas?
