random calls from my grandparents' number

For the past two days, my grandparents have been receiving calls from random people saying that they had just received a call from my grandparents' number.  Aparently these people get a call that show up as if it's from my grandparents number, but when they answer, the call ends ("you hung up on me").  This happened about twenty times yesterday and is continuing today.  My grandmother and her caregiver tried calling Verizon but weren't able to talk to anyone due to the strike.  We tried unplugging all of the phones, but that didn't stop the calls.  My grandparents live in the 434 area code in Virginia.  Yesterday, all of the "calls" were to other 434 numbers, but today they have been "calling" 540 and 804 numbers as well.

I'm assuming that this is a problem with Verizon's system, but if not, please let me know what we can do to stop it.  The constant calls are disturbing my grandmother, and I don't want them to end up being charged for all of the long distance calls that are being dialed using their number.

We are experiencing the same problem since Thursday.  How did they fix it?  We are planning to have a new phone number beginning tomorrow, but are worried the number will continue to call randomly.  I can see in my Verizon account that since 3:00 pm we received over 100 calls and 6 voicemails since our VM says that there is something wrong with our phone number and it is being repaired.  Very strange,

Thank you for your feedback

Happening to us since Monday, tech out Tues. evening, replaced box outside of house, still received calls that night and next day, called verizon back, but not much help, want me to call the people back and ask who their provider is, not happening, I will ask future callers, calls have lightened up and asked one caller last night, he had verizon too....very frustrating and obviously a VERIzON issue, wish they could figure out whats going on and fix it.

It is possible to spoof the phone number that is calling.

I know this because, I have recieved calls from 000-000-0000 which is fake ( there is no way that number is real ).

In your case, that is what could be going on - Someone is spoofing the number of your grandparents.

If this person calling who is spoofing the phone number is also harassing:

Then have the people being called - call the cops have that call traced and the true caller deal with to the full extent of the law.
