Voicemail Notification options? Seems to be none in my area

Does anyone know of any voicemail notification options in NY but outside the NYC area? My previous cable company phone service would text mesasage and email me when i received a home voicemail. It seems like a step back to me, not having this available. I know it sounds crazy but i am considring going back to cable because of this lacking feature.

Actually, call assistant should be offering alerts via email and txt message for VM and such in the future.
