What causes a single home to have no dial tone?

Friday night we had a dial tone and everything was working well. Saturday morning the phone was dead.  I checked at the outside network box, no dial tone there either.  My neighbors all have service. Does anyone know what causes this? I have never experienced this, nor known of anyone who had this issue.  I won't know until sometime Tuesday, that was the earliest they can get a tech out.

Mr_Z. Is this Fios voice or regular copper service?

It's a copper line.  My wife just called from the number.  She was at home and the phone rang, so I am really concerned now about this being some loose connection between the service line and the home.  I plan on leaving the scheduled service because I don't want this problem popping up again.  I won't be charged for this will I?

One other piece of imformation which may be pertinent.  There was at one point (before we purchased the home) a second line.  When I plugged in the phone at the service box, I could hear static.  When I plugged the phone into our regular connect, there was nothing, no sound at all. This indicates to me there was no physical connection.  I should have checked with a DMM to see if there was any voltage on the line, but my guess is there wasn't.

So do I need to call Verizon again to make sure I don't get charged $91 for having the guy come out?

Thanks for the response!

Wow this is really bogus. I just chatted with Verizon online and the rep said I have to cancel the appointment. What kind of nonsense is this? If there is a connection issue between the house and the network that is not something I can't fix. I cannot deal with the possibility of the landline just dropping out because my wife is enrolled in online courses. 4 to 5 days of service down is not feasible. Any advice?

Mr_Z, keep the appointment if the issue is out side of the prem you shouldnt be charged.

Same thing happened to us about 4 weeks ago on a Thursday with regular old fashioned phone service.  25yrs. and not one bit of trouble unless a bad storm and every one was out.  Called home one day to check messages and answering machine wouldn't come on so I think there is a power outage in neighborhood.  Get home and no power outage phone is just dead and only us.  Tried to call from cell to do the automated line test and it said there was trouble with their system and it couldn't be done so instead of waiting for rep  I hung up and tried later that night and automated line test worked and said it was on their end and 2 seconds later phone rings once and dial tone is back.  I go online to verizon and account says problem soloved so I figure that's the end of it.

Then next day it was still working and I came home to note on the door from tech saying it was an inside problem and call for service and since we pay for the line insurance inside I think it is no charge if we need it.    Phone worked all weekend and I forgot to call and tell them so they call Monday morning and she tells me guy did all he could outside but it's probablly inside  and I told her what happened after automated line test and that phone had been working ever since then but would call if there was a problem again and there hasn't been since.   Only thing I notice is my cordless phone and the cordless extension in another room the volume is not as loud when I am listening to a call and it was fine before this  and it's all the way up so I am wondering if it was my cordless phone that screwed up?  Like maybe when it was put back on the hook it didn't sit right on the contacts or something to make the line not work?    I have 2 corded phones in other rooms and volume sounds loud on those when I listen.

Was telling a friend about all this and she asked if they had just put fios on the street and I said no they did that about a year ago.    She said she had the same trouble but on and off all the time right after the fios was installed on the street and she still had regular phone service with no problems for 25yrs. before that  so she cancled and went to time Warner phone to solve the problem.  I think  it was taking too long for verizon to try and fix it and she got impatient so just switched so I don't know if they ever found out what it was for her.   Mary
