Unlawful billing after terminated services ruins credit score

In May of 2018 I graduated from a US college and moved to Berlin, Germany, leaving my Verizon Fios service in the hands of my then flatmates. After many failed attempts throughout August to get Verizon to terminated my Fios account, on the fourth of September 2018 I spoke with a customer service representative who promised me that my services would be disconnected, and to ignore any subsequent billing as that would be corrected now that the account had been terminated, and received an email confirmation shortly thereafter with the following: "Your service(s) will be disconnected on: Sep 04, 2018." My flatmates returned my router, were sure to associate it with my account, even getting me a receipt with confirmation that the equipment had been returned, but I never received the refund for the security payment on the returned equipment. I was billed for services for months after terminating the account, and when I simply stopped paying for the services (I mean, my services with Verizon had been canceled, and I was directed by customer service to ignore them) these "outstanding bills" (for a ghost service) were transferred to a collection agency. The erroneous billing of my account long past the date that my services with Verizon had been terminated, and the subsequent forwarding of the bills to a collection agency has now ruined my credit score. What recourse do I have to get rid of this ridiculous bill and fix my credit score?
