Currently, most calls DO NOT go out over LTE, they go out over CDMA, hence the need for a handset with CDMA capabilities on Verizon.

LTE is used for Advanced Calling when BOTH parties are using Verizon over an available LTE signal. Otherwise, all other "cellular" calls, aside from wifi calling when cellular signal is not available, will use Verizon's CDMA network.
