Why is my phone awake when my screen is off? It is killing my battery.

My new phone's battery is not lasting very long. It appears the phone is staying awake all of the time. I cannot tell why. The screen is going off, but the phone doesn't sleep. I tried the safe mode, but it didn't work either.
