birthday_cake (1).JPGA year ago today the Verizon small business team launched the Verizon Small Biz Blog. We wanted this to be a platform where we could communicate directly to you – small business owners and those of you contemplating starting a business and seeking information.  And, we wanted this platform to be the place for you to communicate directly to us with your comments.

We’ve come a long way over the past year with our blog.  We’ve written about and shared insights on disaster planning, how easy it is to create a website, best practices we learned and how these might be incorporated into your business.

In our posts, we’ve also explained how you can utilize some of the free resources that are available at the Verizon Small Business Center like “Professional Networking” which allows you to connect with other small/medium business owners or to find leads and get questions answered by your peers.

We “spiced up” this blog with featured posts from special guests and around mid-August we introduced the “Weekly Round Ups.”  If you haven’t seen our Friday posts, they’re small collections of articles we find of interest to the small/medium-sized business owner in a quick, easy-to-read format.

To further show our support of small businesses, last month –  in connection with Small Business Saturday – we announced that we’ll give any small business that posts its  information on this blog a $25 AMEX gift card – urging you to spend it at a local business.  We’ve got more AMEX gift cards to give away so do participate if you haven’t done so yet!

To delve further online in the social media space, last month the small business team joined Twitter and Facebook; follow us and “Fan” us if you haven’t yet visited us on these sites.

In the Verizon Small Biz Blog, we’re trying to bring you information and capture emerging trends relevant to you and your business, as well as providing you with content you’d like to see.  So feel free to comment below and let me know what you like about our blog or what you’d like to see.  Any and all feedback will help us better shape this blog to be one that you can rely on to get the business tips and insights you need to take your business to the next level.

By the way, if you are looking to start a blog for your business, read this for some good tips and get growing!

I've never been one to pass up birthday cake, so virtual kudos to the Verizon Small Biz Blog and team involved in birthing the blog and feeding during its first year.

In the spirit of disclosure, I work in Verizon media relations, and have the good fortune of knowing many members of our hard working small business team although I support the consumer side of our wireline-based business.

Atop the business support, recommendations and guidance Verizon provides small business customers, we also seek to put the fruit of innovation in the hands of small business customers.

In a short while, a major game changer -- 150/35 mbps FiOS Internet service -- will be offered to Verizon small business customers, delivering a highly reliable, ultra-fast broadband connection. Our residential consumers were offered this new speed just before Thanksgiving.

For those of you who own, or work at a small business, be on the watch for our newest Internet service that will help further differentiate you and/or your firm from your competitors. Pricing and ordering information will be provided about our new service and we'll make sure the followers of the Verizon Small Biz Blog get all the scoop here.

Bill Kula, Verizon Media Relations

I am a small business who like many is hoping the new year brings prosperity to all. I shop the surrounding small business in my area. I believe that helping the business in my area is also a boost to the community.

I hope others will join me in making small businesses the top of the ladder.

In addition to buying from small businesses, I personally have made 90% of my purchases from handmade crafters based in the United States.  Running my own small jewelry business out of my home in New York I can appreciate the support and always give back to my community. is my own business, I handcraft sterling silver into various gemstone sculptures for a cheeky take on traditional jewelry.

I would love to see more information about handmade art/craft businesses and tips that are geared toward building wholesale relationships and building your web presence.  And of course, how to compete in this tight economy.  Thanks so much.

We need more support like this for small buxinesses. Many resources necessary for the growth of small business that are available to larger companies with higher budgets for things like marketing and promotion are costly. Having a forum where these resources can be shared are critical to the growth of my business.
