still NO GO

From the outage page:

If you regularly use a POP email client such as Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo or Mac Mail you may not have noticed any adverse impact outside of the temporary inability earlier today to connect to your servers.

Well, I'm still not feeling any network e-mail server love:

I:\>ping pop.verizon.net

Pinging pop.verizon.net [206.46.232.132] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 206.46.232.132:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

What's the story now?

Pinging the email server and having the requests time out does not prove anything. My Verizon email is working just fine, just verified that, and I just pinged the email server as you did (and it resolved to the same IP address your command did) and every request timed out, just as yours did. Many sites on the internet have their routers and servers set up to ignore ping requests.

That page does list outages.  Mine currently mentions a tv channel outage in my area.  But it seems they are very slow to update it.  Once was very timely, but not so much any more.  I suspect most Verizon areas responsible for handling outages don't even know how to put updates there.

It took forever for someone to update the page, but they finally did to talk about the outage.

A seperate email also says they are still working on recovering things.   Those who use email clients probably see nothing wrong but those who saved emails in online folders etc may have missing mail.

Hi All-

Here is the latest update from Verizon's Outage page on the email issue effecting some of you:

On 9/12, Verizon experienced an email service disruption that affected a small portion of our email customers. Through our restoration effort, customers are now able to send and receive email normally and will continue to have access to their calendar and address book.

We are actively restoring email folders for customers who were affected. This may take several days to complete. When the issue is fully resolved, email previously sent or received and any personal folders that customers created prior to this interruption will be available.

We apologize for the inconvenience some of our customers have experienced, and we appreciate their patience.

Thank you,
Heather
