I've been having the same problem this morning using Thunderbird. The SMTP server(s) connection keep(s) timing out.

Verizon SMTP servers dead in the water, can POP but not SMTP

Same here. I have outgoing on port 465, so this baffles me. It's been several hours.Verizon needs to get their **bleep** together.

Verizon 800 # says email server "down for maintenance until sunday 1/5 11am"!!! Really????

I am receiving email, but can not send. Was able to send last week, now receiving this message:
