Letter from Verizon Services re change in POP3 server settings

Letter was not even addressed to my correct verizon.net address, which made me suspicious.  My Outlook POP3 settings haven't had any trouble in many, many years, but this letter said the new incoming setting has changed from incoming.verizon.net to pop.verizon.net as well as a change in the outgoing to smtp.verizon.net.

Is this true?   Since I'm a PC tech, I generally leave stuff alone that works well, and in this case, I really am unsure if it's necessary to make changes to email that works fine.   I just chatted with an email tech who said it was not necessary for me to make these changes, quite the opposite of what this email from supposedly Verizon Services stated.    So, is it necessary?  I use Windows Vista and MS Outlook 2007.

I use WIN7 and Windows Live Mail.

Settings are incoming  and outgoing, not POP and SMTP. 

I just tested it and the connection to Verizon mail is fine.

Currently incoming/pop and outgoing/smtp appear to be valid.  Several newer pieces of doc are saying POP and SMTP.

As Verizon has done with the change to SSL by changing the port numbers, Verizon is gradually migrating users to the new servers, pop.verizon.net and smtp.verizon.net. Eventually the old server names will most probably no longer work.

I have found that one advantage to converting to the new server names is that the performance is much, much better.

I use an iPhone and two Apple computers with Apple Mail.  None of my Verizon email accounts will work on any of these devices when I change settings as indicated in Verizon's message about POP/SMPT versus incoming/outgoing.  Anybody else get them to work on Apple devices?

Note I found one option that doesn't work with the new servers.

From back when the servers were not using SSL, I have had APOP authentication set.  The new servers will not accept APOP authentication.  Probably not a problem as long as you do use SSL.

Yep, I found that too, I have 4 Verizon email addresses and I had one set for APOP, not sure why, but had to change it to get it to work. Thanks for posting this, I am sure there are some others out there who will have the same problem.

I modified the settings and no I cannot Send any mail.  I set them back to the original settings and still can't send mail.

I am able to receive but can't send

Any thoughts?

I have at least 5 computers running at any one time, each with several users, several different email clients, 11 or more email addresses, and various email scanners, etc.  While it's no doubt inconvenient to change detailed email settings, I decided to make the changes now.

My reasoning is that the SSL provisions add increased encryption and security to my emails and are worth the small price in time.  In addition this seems like a "sooner or later" situation and while existing settings work today, I doubt that this will be so in the near future.
