I am experiencing the exact same problem.  Tried to work with vz online chat help and inhome agent help etc, including deleting and readding the account details in outlook. Nothing solved it.  I am still working with that pain.  Only thing that I am to do until I figure out the issue hopefully with someone's help as I do not have much hope now, I use the web based VZ emails from netmail.verizon.net and use that to reply or send any email...  I do not mind another client, but based on what I read that also did not work for many... Hopefully VZ will work with MS and come with a solution as part of their customer service obligation.. I can receive the email.

Hope this helps.  Once again, try to use netmail.verizon.net if you are still having the problems to send email.  - Ravi

John,  i am also wondering if it yours goes thru the loop of outgoing mail authentication process and does not get past that?  Atleast that is what is happening for me and is still doing the same.  I also do not understand even if I enter that information of user and password individually, it is not going thru at all.  Does this give clue to any one?  VZ help persons are not of much help here either..

Hello John and others,

After giving up on fixing the issue myself I spoke with live help desk person on the phone who in turn checked with their advance support group.  This is what I found out.  Verizon does not support 2010 officially yet. But they are aware of it.

Here is another work around that is working for me.  I tested the same with outlook express. It worked outgoing email went thru fine.   I have no issue with that one.  So, if you care to, you may also want to try and use outlook express until verizon officially resolved this issue.  They are not giving any ETA for this problem either.

FYI, Windows Live Mail is just an updated/facelifted version of Outlook Express. If you check behind the (new) mail view window in WLM, you will see the same identical menus as Outlook Express 6. So if you want a newer free version, just download WLM from Microsoft. I am using it after buying a new pc with Win7, which comes with WLM. And I have no problems using it with Verizon email.

Now... I also have Outlook 2010 because it came with Office 2010 Pro that I have, have installed it lately, updated it, and have no problems using it with Verizon service either. I just find it a bit too busy for my taste so I will probably stick with WLM for now.

I would suggest that all who have Outlook 2010 issues provide your system info here so that you can possibly find a common link. Since I can use Outlook 2010 with no problems, here is mine for comparison....

Acer PC with 4gb ram, Win 7 64-bit, Verizon Westell 9100 router,  the pc is pretty much unloaded with crap yet as it's new, so not a lot of startup programs. Location, near Tampa, FL.

I got a new computer in Dec and I have been trying to configure Outlook 2010 with Verizon ever since.  I have been using it with Verizon for years with and earlier version but no matter what I do I can't get it to work.  I've tried the Vz In-Home Agent, tried the directions on this blog and several others that I have found on the web with no joy at all.  I have a very large amount of files archived in outlook that are a part of the non-profit org that I volunteer for, I can't just lose these or transfer them easily into another email program (that I know of). 

There simply HAS to be a fix for this.  Help!

I am using 587 port, but Verizon is blocking my IP address cause I am out of the country. STOP It, it is 21st Century and this is a global economy!

Any advice on how to get around this, please?

I don't know if this is the solution you are looking for but with cablevision you could only send outgoing emai through their server - so I did the same with Verizon.  I did change port to 587 for outgoing - but for outgoing mail server I signed up for a verizon email account and just used that "username/password" as my outgoing mail service - leaving all other aspects of my "real" mail account the same.  BTW using outlook 2010.  (Forgive me the excessive "quotes")

Have my own web site with Outlook 2010 email was able to use my own server for pop/smtp while with Comcast and after switching over to Verizon fios this past week, cannot send through my own web/mail server. Tried the same port I used through Comcast (995), tried Verizon tech recommended port 587 and also "default" settings. The ONLY UGLY way to send was by using my verizon login to Verizon and setting "Reply To" for now. Verizon either keeps their techs purposely ignorant or their IT doesn't have a clue or don't care about their paying customers.  As a previous administrator of DNS/mail/web servers, it appears Verizon is incapable of properly managing their servers.

The move over to Port 587 is NOT a Verizon initiative and it was done in order to HELP reduce abuse of mail servers.

 gkdk71  as a former administrator of DNS/mail/web servers, seems you would understand the importance of that.
 
This is not an issue with Verizon unwilling or unable to help customers, this is an issue where the industry as a whole has not moved in sync. There are many 3rd party email providers, and Web Servers that have not made the change of default smtp server from port 25 to port 587. This is not a Verizon caused issue.
 
However, you do not have to use a "REPLY TO" in order to work around this issue.
 
all you need to do, and the majority of mail clients allow for this possibility, is to use the verizon smtp server, outgoing.verizon.net or outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net depending on whether you are a yahoo portal partner or not and then change authentication for the smtp server to use the username / password for your verizon client.

The conventional way for a mail client program to send e-mail is using TCP port 25, which is also the port used by mail servers to talk to each other. But port 25 is widely abused by malware to spread worms and spam. As a result, many ISPs are restricting its use.

Most users shouldn't have a problem anyway. If you only send mail using their ISP account, you can probably still send it using the ISP mail server. But if you want to send mail using the mail server for your office, or perhaps a hosted mail server for a domain you own, you could have problems.

There are a few potential solutions. If you want to use your company's mail server, perhaps you should be using a virtual private network to connect to the company network and mail through that. The other mail server may also support web mail, and since all that goes through port 80 (the http port) the ISP won't block it.

But there is another SMTP submission port, port 587, which almost all mail server supports. In fact, according to the relevant standard, port 587 is the preferred port for mail submission. But even if the mail server software supports it, it may or may not be turned on. You need to check with the administrator or hosting service. Not all large hosting services support port 587.

Changing the port on your outbound mail server can be a bit tricky. In Outlook Express you choose Tools-Accounts, the Mail tab, and double-click the connection you want to change. On the Advanced tab ( click here to see an example ) you change the "Outgoing mail (SMTP):" value from 25 to 587. With other mail clients there will likely be a similar setting, but in some cases (the Evolution mail program, for example) the port is specified as part of the outgoing mail server name, e.g. "mail.whatever.com:587".

Don't forget to include any authentication settings (username and password) required by the mail server.
