I am positng this false email that i received today because it really irritated me. Verizon notify your customers: This email came from the follosing email address: Verizon Email Subscribers {edited for privacy}


Attention: Verizon Subscriber

This mail is to inform all our valued customers that we will be

maintaining and upgrading our database in a couple of days from now. As

we are very concerned with stopping the proliferation of spam. We have

implemented Sender Address Verification (SAV) to ensure that we do not

receive unwanted email and to give you the assurance that your messages

to Message Center have no chance of being filtered into a spam mail

folder. To help us re-set your password on our database prior to

maintainer of our database, you must reply to this e-mail and enter your

Current User e-mail Id ( ) and Password ( ). Our message center will

confirm your identity including the secret question and answer

immediately and reply you with a new Default Password which you must

reset again.

definetely foreward those types of emails to abuse@verizon.net so they can investigate and nip them in the bud.

Actually, the Verizon Abuse email address in that case would be incorrect. 

The Verizon Abuse address is to be used for Internet Abuse the stems from Verizon customers.

 

This is a case of Phishing and thus should be sent to...

Phishing@Verizon.Com
Phishing@VerizonBusiness.Com

In *any* cases of Phishing, I also suggest...

phishing@webwasher.com
reportphishing@antiphishing.org
scams@fraudwatchinternational.com
phishing-report@us-cert.gov
scam@netcraft.com

I have created a Distribution List (aka; D-List) with all the addresses and when I receive Phishing email I send it to the Phishing D-List.

If one is to send complaints to Abuse addresses, one would have to view the Full Headers of the email message and parse the headers for the source address and and any handlers of the message and then determine their respective Abuse email addresses.

In *any* cases of Abuse, Spam or Phishing one should always get the Full Headers and Body of the email and send the Full Header and Body of the abusive email to the appropriate parties (based upon parsing the headers).  If one just "forwards" the email then the headers of the abusive email are lost and action can't really be taken.

Actually, the abuse address is correct. As stated by Verizon here:

"Phishing" occurs when someone tries to trick consumers into divulging sensitive personal information by using phony Web sites or email addresses. If you provide information to a phishing Web site or in response to a phishing email, you could fall victim to unauthorized credit card purchases or identity theft. Verizon does not send emails asking for customer payment information, or for user names or passwords.

If you receive a suspicious email, you should not reply to it, nor should you open any attachments, click on links contained in the email or provide any information in response to it. You can report suspected fraud involving Verizon or Verizon Wireless to abuse@verizon.net or phishing@verizonwireless.com, respectively. Please include the word "phishing" in the subject line of your email and provide as much information as possible about the fraudulent activity or message.

Verizon wireless and Verizon wired have different ToS/AUP so it is no wonder they would provide confusing information.  However note they still indicate phishing@verizonwireless.com .  But, why would you send such messages concerning DUN, DSL and FiOS accounts to VerizonWireless.Com ?

Thus I stand on my statement about Phishing emails related to Verizon to be sent to...

Phishing@VerizonBusiness.Com

I will also base my statements on the number of years of experience in this and similar subject matters and known "best practices".  Verizon has "specific" Phishing email addresses to address Verizon account Phishing and since they exist, best practice dictates they be used as a primary resource.

IFF the Phishing email concerns an organization and they do not have a specific Phishing email address then best practice dictates resorting to using a Security or Abuse email address for for that organization as a fallback, secondary resource.
