Setting up verizon.net email

Hi!  Does anyone know if there's any way to set up my verizon.net email account without having to install whatever silly client Verizon thinks I should be using?  I have my own hosting setup and personal email addresses, I really only want the Verizonnet address so I can use espn3.com.  But Verizon wants me to download some kind of client, I have no idea what it does, and I figure there's about a 99.9999% chance that it's chock-full of spyware.

Can I get around it?  Thanks!

My problem isn't setting up a mail client to access my Verizon mail; my problem is that I do not actually have a verizon mail account, and can't seem to set on up without being forced to download and install some kind of software that I do not want.  Is there a way to bypass this?  Or do I just have to hope it doesn't fill up my Mac with spyware when I install and remove it?

That is odd.

#1 I went to https:///activate.verizon.net/launch/welcome

#2 I Selected either:

a) Reconnect to the Internet because I reset or replaced my modem.

b) OR Configure additional PC or reinstall software.

#3 When I did that. I was prompted for an user name and password.

Do you have an user name and password?

For security reasons do not tell me your user name/password.

What exactly is it asking you to download / install?   Could it maybe be Java or Adobe Flash?
