Hey all

Does anyone else out there not use Verizon mail for the main reason that you get a TON of SPAM emails?  I just checked and found 1900 emails and all of it is SPAM.  I know that there's a spam detector but I don't feel as though it does enough....What are some of your thoughts?

Nope.  I don't get a ton of spam and I have had my Vz address for a dozen years.

However, I do use Verizon's SpamDetector, Webmail rules and rules in my email client.

sparker781, there are several reasons you have "lots of SPAM" in your mailbox and none of which your going to like. When we are online we leave a fingerprint everywhere we visit and/or leave such a permanent mark (such as posting in this forum), here is where some unscrupulous entities (bots or "robot") is "harvasting yours plus everybody else's footprints, then this info is dumped into a metaphoric hopper where it gets sifted for any relevant or pertainent bits of info which are specific to YOU! This is either used or sold to other unscrupulous entities for other nefarious purposes. Unfortunately once your within one of these compilations it is nearly impossible to get yourself out of it without a complete address change. I learn this 25 years ago while a member at AOL. I still retain this addy strictly for this purpose. Whenever somewhere I visit online requires or requests a e-mail address I use that one. Mind you it gets boat loads of SPAM, however I can sort through this mess for any relevant e-mails I've wished to recieve easy enough. Similarly I also never give any of my 4 other e-mail addresses to anyone I don't trust or haven't earned it. I remain relatively SPAM-free in my Verizon. I accept only e-mail from individuals in my Verizon mailbox whom I know personally and abide by my my non-multi-mailing policy (2 or less addresses allowed per e-mailing or from those whom have earned the privilege to add more. Otherwise absolutely no chain mail allowed or bulk mailings of any kind. Those who violate this simple rule are blocked from my Verizon e-mail in addition to being revoked further e-mail privileges to any of my other mailboxes. This may severly harse however I've been virtually SPAM- free for years with the occasionaly few that slip through. You can control this with your next course of action. Spam controls and software are fine but they only protect you from what they know... not what they don't know (much like any commercial anti-virus program).

Try http://www.aboutads.info/ and http://www.networkadvertising.org/choices/ for some of the culprits. A web search will turn up even more not within this little cooperative.

GOOD LUCK 🙂

Funny...Which is why I use gmail....No SPAM....None.  Zilch.  I get an email and choose "report SPAM" and guess what it goes away.

Well until their SPAM detectors run smoother I'll stick with gmail.

Thanks for the explanation

Well in addition to the wonderful explanation of SPAM and why we get it.  I'll take my chances with gMail.  I am not sure why Verizon has yet to flip the switch to IMAP either, I am sure someone can give me a reason for that?  I been a verizon customer since we had DSL and it's funny that even with the free email addresses I was given, none of them are in use.

With that being said.......I will await your answers to the questions I have....You know the IMAP thing and the SPAM thing.  I do alot of checking on job boards and check my email and surf the web for news....So that means I should get SPAM for a new PC or I've won the lottery...Your answers are as frivilous as Verizon's SPAM checkers....
