Consistent Latency Issue since upgrading to 75/25

A couple months back I upgraded to 75/25 on my account, ever since when playing one of my games I get massive amounts of packetloss on the very first hop right after the Verizon hops. Sometimes it is a little, under 4% and playable, most times though it is well past 10-15%, even as high as 50% and I just can't do anything, even connect. The trace is below.

Cycles: 339

As you can see, I let it run a few minutes. The game has a built in trace program. The 6th hop, very first after Verizon, has 37% packetloss. I'm guessing this is a major hop somewhere and something I have no control over. I've tried restarting after doing a dhcp release and it normally doesn't work.

thanks

Alter.net is the old UUNet/MCI Backbone that Verizon currently owns. So, your packet loss issue is found right there on the Verizon backbone. The question now is, are you only seeing latency and packet loss to that router or does it continue onward on a consistent basis? It's fine if a single router drops packets since they can be set to do that, but it's not OK if it is going from one router and continuing to the end

To rule out any issues with FiOS in the Buffalo area, here's a WinMTR AND a Traceroute to that server from my DSL connection which has some light web browsing and some games running on it.

So yeah, there is certainly some loss with that router but it's hard to say for sure if that router is problematic. The two hops in PNAP are not losing data so it suggests that things may be fine but the alter.net router may be under a good amount of load. They have been problematic like that since Sandy though!

Yeah the ALTER.net hops have always given me trouble, a few percent here and there. I guess since Sandy makes sense for hwo long i've been having problems with that one hop. It seemed to fix itself around Christmas but the past two weeks it has gotten really bad again. Anything above 5% and i'm pretty much unable to do anything in the game due to limits set by the devs.

Is there anything I can do since your trace also shows packetloss?

Thanks.

As mentioned in a few other places, you can try changing your IP address by leaving the router turned off for a few hours, though I doubt this will help. I'll see if I can pull some strings to get some information on what is going on here since there have been as you've mentioned, an uptake in complaints. Much of it seems to be peering issues but I have not been able to do a through check on what is wrong from an identically fast connection (time constraints).

I've checked on the alter.net hops again this moring and a clean sweep of them is showing no packet loss and little variance in latency. What's curious is how latency to the endpoint servers when I go to ping them directly remains relatively stable in comparison to the router, and that is most likely a priority setting.

I appreciate all your help. Just to follow up, I talked to a Verizon agent through the web yesterday and he basically gave me everything after the 4th hop is out of their hands.

Positive is I did a trace today and for 1,400 cycles it shows 0% ploss across the board. Negative is once I go into the game I still have anywhere from 4% to 25% ploss like before. Even though the trace shows nothing the game still is losing packets, and I have to think it is the same hop.

In addition I shut down my router for 15 minutes tonight just to do a full reset and try and change the ip, it was a no go.

Thanks again for all your help and I hope you are able to pull those strings because i've been unable to find a way to try and contact them to find out why their router is dropping so many packets.
