Netflix Super HD Finally

Netflix is opening Super HD to all customers.

Hopefully Verizon can handle the load... I know they have had issues in some areas due to peering arrangements. Netflix is probs betting ISPs will give in and join Open Connect after seeing the extra bandwith load.

Not betting, hoping. (Possibly a little praying as well.)  While hundreds of ISPs have joined up,  the big ISPs have refused.  Netflix needs the big ISPs to join.   This battle is about money.  The money  they derive from content and delivering that content to viewers.  ALL the players want  to increase their piece of that pie, and none of them will give in easily.

Fair point but I still see it as being a powerplay by Netflix. It sucks for them to have to deliver all that traffic but on the flip side there are enough Netflix viewers that Verizon and other ISPs will be in trouble if the loading issues become more widespread (and they will with all the increased bandwidth).

It is basically a game of chicken (and always has been) but by allowing higher bandwidth streams Netflix has sped things up so to speak. (and smartly at a time when competition is still lacking)

I doubt it (at least during evening hours / weekends). They can barely handle streaming 720p HD video. SuperHD (or 3D) just isn't going to be possible.

Definitely a smart move by Netflix to try and get more ISPs to install their cache servers as easily avoidable congestion increases.

(Of course Verizon would rather just go to the courts to try and eliminate net neutrality so that they can triple charge for a single service).

I believe Verizon can handle the load -- in at least my area (Southern California).  All the Netflix complaints I've read on the various forums I monitor come from the East Coast.

The best service I'm able to get with FIOS Quantum, 50MB download speed, with Netflix ANY EVENING OF THE WEEK...is 2 out of 4 dots on my Roku. 4 dots is 720p. There's no way you'll get 1080p with FIOS except possibly during the day.

It's even getting bad during the day at times, too 🙂 Verizon is letting tons of peering points saturate, even with the likes of Level 3.

My fios service is fine for everything I do with it EXCEPT stream netflix.  The picture is worse than it ever was with timewarner and it buffers.  You can have have your 25/50 but not if you want to stream from netflix.  So I would not increase my bandwidth expecting that to get any better.  It is being throttled by verizon.

How do you get to see that dot display on Netflix on a Roku?
