Tampa/Bradenton FiOS upgrading to 150Mbps any time soon?

I currently have 75/35 and really like it.

That said, my family has 4 computers, 4 smart phones, and a wifi blu ray player that 6 people are using, often for gaming or downloads and I'd like to know if 150/65 is coming to our neighborhood any time soon?

I asked the Verizon rep and looked at the website and it's not available in my area at this time.

I don't know why. I know in some parts, the price difference between 75 and 150 is like $10 dollars a month.

In Florida, it seems to be $50 dollars which is steep. Hopefully with some of the DOCSIS 3.0 offerings from the cable companies exceeding 100Mbps, the upgrade price to keep folks at the top tier won't be super steep.

Anyway, anyone know if 150 or *gasp* 300 is coming to the Tampa/Bradenton area, soon or even at all?

Likely as soon as Verizon rolls GPON out to your area. To the best of my knowledge, a lot of Florida is on BPON, which is 622Mbps down, 122Mbps up per each shared Fiber connection. Verizon won't allow the 150M/75M plans on BPON for obvious reasons. GPON can do 2.4Gbps down, 1.2Gbps up, so there's much more headroom.

See if you can ask about that. If it's available, push to be moved to it. Verizon should be upgrading that gear as the PON begins to saturate, and as gear begins to break down (BPON gear isn't really mass produced anymore. Much cheaper to use GPON or X-GPON).

What year was Fios installed where you are? I know some people end up needing a new ONT to get the higher speeds, but if you can't even do that it sounds like the local hub is old and can't even push it out.

Also, keep in mind Verizon sold Fios off to Frontier in FL, CA and TX so at some point in 2016 Frontier will be taking over.

Who knows what that will bring. Frontier doesn't exactly have the best track record.
