Recently I installed Fios in my home. The installation went great. I was able to connect my iMac via Ethernet and my iPad, iPhone, iTouch and XBOX wirelessly using the Fios router without any problems. However, for some reason I cannot get my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop to connect through my wifi. I called Fios technical support and was on the line with them for nearly an hour. The agent was very patient trying to diagnose and troubleshoot the problem. He also got his Supervisor involved. Unfortunately, was unsuccessful in connecting my laptop to my wifi. Ultimately he determined because I was able to have my other peripheals connect to my wifi, the issue lies with the laptop. I have spent several hours on google trying to find some resolution but have been unsuccessful in doing so. My Dell Inspiron came equipped with a wifi link 5100 mini card and runs off of Windows XP 32b bit. It should also be noted that i did not have this problem when I had optimum online internet running of a DLink N Router previously. I tried resetting the router, clearing the previous network on the Wireless tab, updating the drivers and made sure the wifi button on the laptop is turned on.
Can anyone offer me some assistance? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Which router do you have? Is it an Actiontec rev. I, or an older model?
- Which security protocol are you using? WEP, WPA, or WPA2? Try one of the other protocols.
- Have you tried (only as a test) disabling wireless security on the router?
Do you still have the D-Link router? You could set it up as a Wireless Access Point (WAP).

Where did you get the drivers for the Intel card? Intel's website or from Dell? You may want to try Intel's own website instead of Dell's to see if those get you on. Also, if your router is using WEP security, consider moving it to WPA2, especially since you have a Wireless N card in that laptop.
I do have an Inspiron 1545 myself, and it's never given me a problem. I had a Dell Wireless 1397 card installed in it (made by Broadcom), but swapped it out for an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 several months ago to get a Dual band WIreless N card, since I do a lot of consulting for folks with that laptop. I've never had issues what so ever with it.

Anti-Phish,
- I have an Actiontec rev. I.
- The security protocal being used is WPA2.
- I havent tried disabling the wireless security on the router, i dont know how to do this.
Smith6612,
I got the drivers from the Dell site. I will try downloading the intel drivers. Currently the router is already set to WPA2. I am not certain, but i dont believe my wireless card is an "N" model.
TomH309,
I dont understand, your wireless connection is indicating "Not Connected" but your still able to access wifi?

I was finally able to fix the problem. I changed the security setting on the Fios Router/Modem from WPA2 to WPA.
For anyone that may encounter the same problem, the following are the list of steps i performed to resolve the issue;
1.Connect Ethernet cable from Router/Modem to laptop
2.Access Fios Router setting by entering http://192.168.1.1/ in the address bar
3.Hit Enter
4.On Verizon Login enter Username: & password: (usually found on the bottom of the fios router/modem)
5.Select Wireless Setting (Top Bar)
6.On Advance Security Setting Select WPA (not WPA2)
7.Hit “Apply”
8.Go to your laptop right click on wifi (computer) icon on taskbar
10.Select “View Available Networks”
11.Double click on the Fios network
12.Once you get the pop up enter the security network key (found on the bottom of Fios Router/Modem)
13.Enter the security network key again
14.Hit "Enter"
15.Once the connection is established, you should now be able to access the internet via wifi
I hope this helps. It was a headache to figure out what was the problem initially.

TO USE ping ipconfig/all nslookup tracert
GOTO:
Start/Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt
Once you are there you can also use the command cls TO CLEAR THE SCREEN after each of those commands are used
>ping 192.168.1.1 CHECKS OUT ROUTER
>ipconfig/all GIVES YOU COMPLETE INFORMATION ON YOUR SYSTEM
>nslookup google.com GIVES YOU ALL THE ADDRESSES AVAILABLE TO YOU FROM google
YOU CAN THEN ping ANYONE OF THEM AND SEE HOW YOU ARE COMMUNICATING WITH THAT ADDRESS
>tracert www.verizon.net TELLS YOU HOW MANY ROUTERS YOU WENT THROUGH TO GET TO verizon.net
HAVE FUN !!!
