wifi range

Received  newest wifi router from verizon, speed test much better but the range of wifi single cut by about 1/3.   My old router I could connect with no problem all over the house and mostly out on the patio, but now it seems the range is less??  Is here a way to improve without having to purchase 30.00 extenders????

2.4GHz channels afford wide coverage but slow (relative) speeds. 5.0GHz channels are the opposite with faster speeds but smaller coverage.

Is it possible that 2.4 was being used with the old router?

Typically routers should be centrally located for optimal coverage.
