Bizarre variation of "estimated wait time" for online (chat) support

When I first said I would like to chat with a support person, I was 57th in line and the estimated wait time was about 11 minutes. After half an hour or so, I was about 20th in line and the estimated wait was 1 hr 30 min. At that point, I began watching the numbers and discovered that the variation was fluctuating wildly. While the number of available support people in the far-off location is probably changing, the usefulness of this estimate is roughly zero.
