DSL Connection dropping continuously

I've had Verizon DSL for about 6 weeks in the Washington DC area and this week I started to experience problems with my connection.  The internet will drop out several times an hour for about a minute and then go back on.  I have a Westell 6100F modem connected to a Netgear router.  I am pretty certain it's not the router because my computer shows "local only" (vista) via wireless when this happens.  I called Verizon tech support and after a few calls they set up a tech visit in 2 weeks.  Does anyone have any ideas for what I can do to fix this in the mean time?

The Westell needs to be in bridge mode and the Netgear needs to do the PPPoE authentication. Also Vista has known issues connecting to the internet. Make sure that all of your Vista updates are done.

Can you tell me how to check if this is set up already and if not how I would go about doing this?
