My DSL always stops working if there is a lighting storm in the area. As soon as the storm moves on, it comes back up.
I do the standard troubleshooting, resetting computer, modem, etc. but nothing works until the storm moves out of the area.
Happens every time - no exceptions - frustrating as heck. Anyone have a similar problem or advice? Thanks.

I fixed it. I replaced DSL with FiOS, and no longer lose service when I can hear thunder, nor do I lose about 500kbps in downlink speed when it rains.
However short of replacing DSL with FiOS service, you are stuck.
In simple terms the lightning strikes inductively couples energy into the telephone lines, and the induced noise exceeds the signal margins in the link, so the link goes down. It takes sufficiently long to reestablish the link and negotiate the new link, that often another lightning strike takes out the link again before it can be reestablished.
