I just replaced my CPU with a refurbished Dell because my old CPU got fried. I installed Windows XP successfully but when I try to connect to the internet it says there is no connection. The cord from the modem is plugged into the new CPU and the lights on the side of it are all lit up and flashing (I have the bundle so everything runs through there). I have tried following the 'Tools - Diagnose Connection' advice in Internet Explorer but that did not work. I have also gone through the 'Control Panel - Connections' procedures and that did not work either.
Can someone please walk me through (in simple terms as I am not very technically savvy) how I can get this connection working?
Windows XP and Verizon Internet are pretty much 'plug'n'play". So if everything is in good order, it should workd. If all the lights are one, the Ethernet adapter and cabling are all probably good.
From your description however, the most likely issue is that you do not have drivers for the Ethernet Adapter in the Computer.
If you go to Control Panel>system>hardware/devicemanage, click on network adapters, and see if there is something there indicating that the hardware isn't working or is unrecognized. (If it really is unrecognized it may be elsewhwere, but will still be flagged in device manager.
If that is the case, it is a matter of going to the web site of the Ethernet manufactuer or Dell, and downloading the drivers and installing them. ONce that is done, your ethernet can be expected to work.
