Wireless connection

I have a DSL modem from Verizon (a USB connect) and it works great but I'm on Vacation out of the country of the USA and I can get on but it's roaming.  Does that cost more?  Also I have access to our wireless modem at our cottage but everytime I sign into it it says (The network password needs to be 40 bits or 104 bits depending on your network configuration.  This can be entered as 5 or 13 ASCII characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal).  I have no idea what that means.  We have the wireless password and I see the location when I go into Verizon wireless but I don't know enough to fix or change.  Can anyone help me.  Thanks

#1 The number of characters is self explanatory.

#2 From Perfect Passwords GRC's Ultra High Security Password Generator

at https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

a) hexadecimal characters (0-9 and A-F):

b) printable ASCII characters.

Printable ASCII characters, seems to mean all of the possible keys on your keyboard.

#3 The higher the bit strength, the more time it takes for someone to hack into your network.

b) But WEP is so badly broken it takes them (the person/people trying to "break" in your network), 1 to 2 minutes.
